I heard somewhere that only amateurs are allowed to compete on this show and that Sabrina was a trained dancer and choreographer..........or has it become like everything else and just let anyone compete no matter what?

It doesnt' bother me Boosgrammy...I enjoy the show; however, I do think that if it is labeled a "DANCE" competition, then it should be judged on dancing, not popularity

I totally agree with you, and this is the reason that I was rooting for Helio. He is a race car driver- he never danced before. Sabrina is an entertainer and she dances in all of those Chetteh Girl videos, plus she studied dance in college.
Same with Mel B.- she was in The Spice Girls where they danced in all the videos. I know that these were not "ballroom" dances they did, but they do have experience (and they make their living) doing some sort of dancing!

Well, didn't last night's results and the results of previous seasons contradict your own argument? Helio was not a dancer and won. All the other so called dancers you mentioned did not win.

American Idol is billed as a singing competition but it isn't - deep down it's a popularity contest. These shows are about drawing in fans and the best way to do that is to have fan participation. How many people do you think would watch the show if it was only judged by the experts and the fans had no voice? If that was the case Kelly Monaco would not have won season 1 - the judges were all over her for a long time in the competition. John O'Hurley would have won because he was the judges' golden boy.

I've never heard ABC say that this show was only about dancing. It's about dancing and fan loyalty. And that's what makes it exciting. You don't know who is going to make it through week after week or who will win. Often it's a huge surprise who wins the show. That's one of the reasons I love it.

That's exactly what I thought. Even though they don't do ballroom dancing, musical performers like Mel B, Sabrina & even Marie Osmond are at least accustomed to learning complex choreography in short periods of time. That much gives them an edge, I think.

Granted, some people just naturally have more rhythm than others, but it's not exactly fair when you put a football player, a boxer or a race car driver against someone who has a significant dance background. That's why I like to see them win. To me, they are more deserving.

i know it suppose to be that all those celebrities not suppose to have any formal ballroom dance training, but i agree, it would not be fair to expect a performer who spend most their career on stage dancing (either it's hiphop, pop or whatever) against a football linebacker whose career involve hit the opponent as hard as they can.

I think it should be more fair if they categorize all the celebrities in one categories and make them compete. For example, have Justin Timberlake compete with Nick Carter and Britney Spear and Beyonce, etc... But have Tom Brady compete with Tony Romo, Peyton Manning, Steven Jackson, Brian Urlacher, etc...

I thought the guy who won last time was a speedskater not a singer. Apolo Ono. And to top it off even if they have some dance experience it is usually in an area that is far removed from ballroom. So in that was they are all on equal footing. Pardon the pun.

I agree with you 100%. I never undersod why Mel, Sabriana, and even Marie were in the competition.. they all have some sort of dancing expirience.. ppl argue that its diff dancing.. but it is still dancing none the less!!!
Marie should of been voted off a long time ago... she is a horrbible dancer.. very annoying. She just has a huge fan base.
I am very very glad Helio won.. he was the only one left with no dancing expirience, most improved... and very hard working!! He deserved it!!

None of the dancers including Sabrina have had any ballroom dancing training. Ballroom is so different with the lifts, and extending of the arms and which way your toes point - compared to the way some have already been dancing. You need strong legs.

To a point they are amateurs. They dont do ballroom dancing as a profession, so that is how they are labeled amateur. Sabrina does not do that type of dancing. Geez people, don't be so nitpicky over everything! Its entertainment, and if you don't like it and it bothers you so much, turn the channel.

it's supposed to be for amateurs. i think it's stupid how sabrina was on there, they did it to attempt to get young viewers and more media attention.

i was hoping for marie to win. she's progressed a lot the past 10 weeks and kept on dancing for a form of therapy. she desreved to win. mel b. has dance experince and Hellio isn't an American citizen and needs to go on the Brazillian DWTS!
