It's a pop screen. It diffuses the the air from popping the microphone diaphragm when you say your p's and t's.

It's a windscreen and helps cut down on the air noise or wind noise. I agree with the other responders, too, in that the "B" and "P" sounds are softer when using the screen. It's useful because your voice comes across as more pleasant to listen to and not as harsh sometimes. As for wind and air noise, think of a movie or home video taken from a moving car or truck--the hiss and "Whoosh" you hear could be reduced by using the windscreen. There is a professional editor named Jim Boyd who even said he used socks on his larger microphone to reduce noise!

It is used to keep sweat and spit off the microphone so it doesn't pop and crack.
