I suppose the use of 'k' gained prominence after the scare of the late 1990's, commonly referred to as Y2K which meant year two thousand. 'k' stands for kilo, one of whose meanings is one thousand. Hence 50k would mean 50,000.

In the metric system, K stands for Kilo, which means 1000.
So £1K is £1,000.
£K1M = £1,000,000 (........M=Mega= 1 million =1,000K)
