I read that they only make like 2,000 wigs per year. I read they get thousands of donations every week. I read they sell most of the hair to movie and theater costume designers/companies. I don't know if it's true. In my experience most charities do shady things like this.

Non-profits are a myth.

I never thought about Locks of Love in particular, but I am always skeptical about things like that.

Locks of love gives it's hair to kids who have alopecia areata, NOT cancer. That's a big misconception. Alopecia causes hair loss all over the body and can be long term. Cancer hair loss occurs only when undergoing chemo, so the hair loss is temporary while alopecia areata can be more long term.

I don't believe it's a scam. I believe that it's probably expensive to make a wig (labor and materials) and a non-profit organization must make enough money to be able to run itself. I'm also sure that most of the hair they receive is probably not the highest quality.

Either way, I'm still going to donate my hair when it's long enough.

Well according to Wikipedia they sell the donations they get that are less then the 10" required donations to offset manufacturing costs.
I don't think it is a scam at all. I gave in October of 2006 and plan on doing it again after my wedding in June.

There is only a very small portion of usable hair when it's donated. They take what they can and get rid of the rest. I'm sure they don't 'sell' it and if they do I'm sure it's non profit.

I donated my hair when I cut it off prior to my chemotherapy.

I don't know about all that, I have donated my hair 4 times in my life, and they always send me a letter and a picture of who my hair went to... If they do that, that makes me angry, I have volunteered so much at MD Anderson Cancer Center here in Houston and this really helps with their self esteem

I don't think it's a scam. U can c the people who recieved wigs on their website. I think it's just a case of someone trying to make good people look bad.

I know a lot of nurses that I work with contribute their hair regularly. I had not heard this. Perhaps they sell the hair that doesn't meet their standards or won't work well.
