SANTANA IS 28 YEARS OLD.....He still has 4-5 years in his prime as being the one of if not the best in the game. You have to give up something to get him, and no one wants Damon. He can't hit or field anymore. Not much of a market for a CF who makes 13 mil and can't play anymore.

Here's the latest update from the rumor mill:
The New York Daily News has installed the New York Yankees as a 3-1 favorite in the race to acquire Johan Santana of the Minnesota twins. The Boston Red Sox are 4-1, the Los Angeles Angels are 5-1 and the New York Mets 8-1.
"It's no secret that the Yankees would love to add the lefthanded ace to their rotation, but at what price? They have made it clear that Joba Chamberlain is untouchable, although Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy can be had for the right price - and Santana, who will be 29 on March 13, could be that player."
Knowing this, here's my take on the whole issue, and don't forget I am a Yankees fan.
I do not want the Yankees to trade for him --- the price is way too costly, and will only create other voids to fill like CF to replace Melky Cabrera, and a couple of pitching spots. Johnny Damon seems to be getting a lot of press here in YA regarding this trade. Do your homework folks. Damon is not what he used to be. His back is shot and he can't reach second base from the outfield wall. The Twins have already said that Cabrera, Chamberlain, and either Hughes or Kennedy will sweeten the pot on the deal.
Dodgers owner Frank McCourt's only smart decision this offseason has been to hire Joe Torre. He won't give up the nucleus of that team to get Santana. What he needs to do is rip Miguel Cabrera out of the Angel's grasp, and get a CF with an arm.
The only reason that the Red Sox would throw big money out there (and they probably will) is to keep Santana out of pinstripes, not because they need another good pitcher. The Sox have one of the best rotations going.
That leaves the Mets --- the longshot in the derby. This is the team that needs him the worst with Glavine being gone and Pedro at best will be a shell of his former self after the rotator surgey.

The Twins would be trading Santana because they know they can't afford once he's a free agent, so why in the world would they take Johnny Damon and his $13m salary? Unless the Yankees were to pay at least $10m of that, there's no way the Twins would go for it.
As for the pitching prospects, why would the Twins accept Ian Kennedy for the best pitcher in baseball? If you want to get Santana, you have to be willing to give up something good - in this case, kids like Hughes or Chamberlain. There's no guarantee that either will turn into a stud at the major league level, and it's unlikely that either will ever be as good as Santana.
As for Shelley Duncan, how much more time do you want to give to a guy who hasn't even had 100 at-bats at the major league level, and is essentially a 28-year-old career minor leaguer?

first of all dont assume the yanks will get santana, there are only one of a few teams interested
but i dont think the twins would accept a trade that only involves one good younf arm from than yanks
as for damon, im sure the yanks would love to dump him, but what reason would the twins possibly have for wanting him, the yanks wanted to pry him from the sox, they got him, and now hes nothing like what he was for the sox or even for the royals, nobody else is going to take him in a trade, its like the giants including omar vizquel in a trade for miguel cabrera, why would the marlins want him?
damon has virtually zero trade value

Dont. Touch. Ian.
Thier making a big mistake if they trade him.
YOU JUST DONT TOUCH YOUR BIG PROSPECT.
I think he's going to be good. Why trade a pticher who is still 22 for a 28 year old pitcher with 1 year left in his contract?
Trade Duncan, Damon, or Melky. Or just put them in a package. But whatever you do,
DONT TOUCH IAN.

There's no way the Yanks are trading Joba. I think Hughes should actually be the one to go of the three young pitchers - where's the 95+ mph fastball we heard so much about? Kennedy looks like another Mussina and Joba looks like he could be a mega-star. I'd have no problem if they gave up Damon, but they'd probably have to eat a huge chunk of his salary

Oh how I would laugh if they threw Damon in for Santana. lololol As a Red Sox fan I'd love to see Santana but not at the expense of losing any of our young guns. It only makes sense that the Yanks go after him seeing that their pitching is in the toilet at the moment.

It seems as though the Yankees aren't changing their concept of "win now" no matter what Hank Steinbrenner says about how the Yankees won't be expected to win the World Series next season.
Their bad concept of trading their future for a star now has blown up in their face in the last seven seasons and apparently they haven't learned enough from their bad decisions.
I guess they are destined to not win another World Series for another seven seasons.

The Yankees could care less about the future. They are about winning the WS next season. Nothing else matters to that organization. Santana is flat out the best pitcher in baseball & it will take young prospects to get him.
