Santana is not a free agent yet until the end of the 2008 season and already this is becoming the most overworked/overasked question in the Baseball Section.
The teams interested are Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets, and Yankees.
It will come down to dueling bank accounts between the Red Sox and the Mets. Here's why. Frank McCourt the Dodgers owner won't trade off the team to get one pitcher. Second, the Yankees are not going to give up what Minnesota will want for him (Cabrera, Chamberlain, and either Hughes or Kennedy).
The Red Sox will throw big money at him to keep him out of New York.
The Mets need him the worst after losing Glavine and Pedro being suspect due to shoulder surgery.
Here's the latest from Yahoo Sports:
The New York Daily News has installed the New York Yankees as a 3-1 favorite in the race to acquire Johan Santana of the Minnesota twins. The Boston Red Sox are 4-1, the Los Angeles Angels are 5-1 and the New York Mets 8-1.
"It's no secret that the Yankees would love to add the lefthanded ace to their rotation, but at what price? They have made it clear that Joba Chamberlain is untouchable, although Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy can be had for the right price - and Santana, who will be 29 on March 13, could be that player."

If the Yankees are willing to part with some prospects and sign Santana long-term, then more power to them.
I'm a Jays fan and this will knock us down a little further, but I can't fault the Yankees for going out and trying to add the best pitcher in baseball to their staff. I wish that my team was this aggressive in trying to build a winner. I don't like the Yanks, but you have to give them credit for doing whatever it takes to win.
All that said, of course, I'd still rather he stays in Minnesota!

A two time Cy Young award winning pitcher like Santana deserves the chance to play on a team that could get him a ring. He deserves to be part of an iconic organization.
If you don't think excellent teams can use great pitchers, you're out of your mind. The Yanks could use Santana. Pitching is the reason we haven't gotten out of round 1 of the playoffs in 3 years.

A tean that could really use them?
So, you think if the Yankees have a rotation of,
Wang - Joba - Hughes - Kennedy - Mussina
THEY DONT REALLY NEED HIM? So you think that a rotation of THREE rookies and 1 washedup pitcher DOESNT need Santana?

It seems as though the Yankees aren't changing their concept of "win now" no matter what Hank Steinbrenner says about how the Yankees won't be expected to win the World Series next season.
Their bad concept of trading their future for a star now has blown up in their face in the last seven seasons and apparently they haven't learned enough from their bad decisions.
I guess they are destined to not win another World Series for another seven seasons.
