Ok so this baby we watch shes 4 months old, and she can be sound asleep and then she just wakes up and starts crying , sometimes screams to the top of her lungs. Is there something that can cause that? I've thought about maybe it is nightmares but if its that, that means she would have them all the time. I've never seen a kid to it that much like her. It's funny cause she would go to sleep and be dead asleep and then out of no where she starts screaming/ crying. Any advice?

Its totally and completely normal. Every infant does it at some point. It's not caused by anything more than the fact that she's awake and upset that she's not asleep. Or that she's awake and someone isnt holding her, or whatever her ailment might be.

My 6 week daughter tends to do this. When she's awake, she's not a fussy baby. But whenever she first wakes up, she wakes up with a startle and a scream. Its like the sleep to awake transition is hard for her. She generally calms down after 2-3 minutes of waking up... or she'll even let out a cry and then fall right back to sleep. We've ruled out sickness and pains w/ her pediatrician.

Could be any number of things, night terrors is a definite possibility. She may be teething and waking in pain, there may be a strange noise waking her, she may realize she is in a strange place, she might have gas, she might have an ear infection. First place to start is a Doctor's office.

our 11 month old does that once in a while, not often though... about a week ago he woke up at 2am and was inconsolable, had to walk him around, took 10 min to get him to calm... we chalked it up to a bad dream... it is definitely disconcerting for the parents...

my recommendation is to pick her up right away and walk her, let her see some things she is familiar with, that will bring her back to reality and re-assure her that she is not still in that bad dream... distract her basically...

Sounds like gas or pre-teething. My son is 6 mos. old and he does this sometimes when he wakes up but as soon as you pick him up he smiles, coos and it's over.

Lots pf babies do that! It's very nprmal. The fact is that cry because they're awake, sometimes they cry like that if they're startled into wakefulness. No worries!
