I decided to take a different approach to Christmas. I was run ragged with the idea of buying for my friends and family. WHY? Why should we give to grown adults that probably have so much "crap" at home anyway. I decided to donate to reputable charities in a few people's name. Finally a gift to someone who really will appreciate a gift and although I won't be there to see them at least I know I did something for someone who really needs a present.

I LOVE the idea of a "different approach to Christmas." I'm actually involved as an alumni in a sorority and we do various philanthropy ALL year ! However in the spirit of the holiday season this year.

We've made/served dinner to the residents of Ronald McDonald House. We collect hotel toiletries/supplies for gift boxes for soldiers in the Middle East. We make/purchase hat/gloves/scarves for needy children/adults. We collect donate maternity clothes to woman's shelter's (all yr.) We are baking desserts for a church soup kitchen and serving meals for (2 hrs.) on a Saturday in January.... So, I believe that you can have the "spirit" of Christmas all year around ! When my children are older I would like to involve them in the charitable giving...

It doesn't have to be money I think time is better spent ! If you are NOT involved in a sorority/fraternity... Check out your local Jaycees or other community organization.. See what they are doing within your community.. Also, local churches, missions etc...Good luck....

This Christmas we are flat broke, and we just bought a new house and had to buy a washer and dryer cuz ours completely went out on us last week...but there are these friends of ours that has owed us some money that, well we could really use but we told them that if they help us move and help clean our rental house that we would call it even. I know it's not charity but I do charity stuff all thru the year, I mean why do you need to do it for Christmas too? I use Christmas as a family time, we don't see our family much so that is more important this time of year.

I wanted to do that but it would not fly with my family.
The World Wildlife Fund has a thing where you can "adopt" a wild animal like a polar bear or a panda. I wanted to do that for the main people. They would get a certificate, a photo, and a stuffed animal. I think it's so cute and unique. However, my husband said no. He won't buy me one for Christmas.
I do volunteer with an organization in town. I have made donations to charities recently. I'm going to make more donations after the holidays. I try to involve my husband and my stepkids in what I do.

I donate blood every three months. I'm eligible to donate again on 12/15; since I'm about flat broke, that'll be all I can do!
And well said about your new approach to Christmas - let's put Christ back into the holiday season!

if we look we all know someone that is in a real bind.... even worse than ours.... pick a family ... or person... ask friends or neighbors to help fill there needs..... I knew this family that had just moved into a rental ...single mom .. 4 kids... not even beds.... one of our neighbors decided to make them her project for the season ... she went to all the neighbors collecting extra stuff... neighbors thought of stuff they knew someone had.... and 2 trucks of stuff showed up at her door... every one helped carry it in and set it up.... one of the Lady's made cookies... and we all said merry Christmas... we all have too much stuff...or something extra..... if we look out for each other ... we all win....
