I have a Ryobi and it has worked great for years now (7). For good work, put more concern into your bits. You will get what you pay for when you use cheap bits.

The Best router for woodworking is a matter of opinion. I use a couple routers on a nearly daily basis and in the past 16 years I haven't had a bit of problem with my small 3/4hp Porter-cable Model 100 for small projects like hinge mortising and ect. Last year I researched a lot to find another Porter-Cable set that has both a plunge base and a fixed base with a 2-1/4 hp motor, Model 893PK. The fixed base is superb as it has a very easy to adjust depth control that can be mounted in a table for great versitility. The motor is varible speed from 10,000 - 23,000 rpm with plenty of power to do heavy projects such as raised panel doors and cabinetry. If you are looking for the best setup this is one to seriously consider.

I just found a site with thousands of downloadable woodworking plans, it s really great. You can check it out here ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info ) Here is an honest review : If you want to start a woodworking project, you need all the necessary information, including schematics, blueprints, materials lists, dimensions etc. That is where TedsWoodworking comes in. The plans are clearly drawn and there're step-by-step explainations of how the plan should be done and put together. There are several other sites whose collection of plans have the dimensions totally wrong without any indication of parts lists, material lists or the tools needed. If you're one of those people who have bought plans like this in the past, TedsWoodworking will change your perception. In Ted's Woodworking you will get everything you need: Diagrams which are detailed with a full set of dimensions, step-by-step instructions how to start your project and the necessary materials for that particular project. All the woodworking tools you will need: If you are a beginner or have done some woodworking you will find these plans easy-to-follow as the instructions are very clearly written. The woodworking plans are straightforward so they are not complicated at all. Even if you are a total newcomer to woodworking you will simply be able to master all the techniques that are needed and the woodworking skills very quickly by following the concise and clear instructions. Another thing which is so great about these woodworking plans is that there have been some videos included and there are some to guide you in how to build benches home furniture dog houses bird feeders sheds and much much more. There is also a lifetime member acess included in the package and you get these extras for no cost to you as they are free with no additional charges at all! This alone is worth the entire price for TedsWoodworking. Ted Mcgrath is a very dedicated and experienced woodworker who knows what he is talking about when it comes to woodworking and DIY projects s he has been a woodworker for many many years. There is only one drawback that we could find and that being with 16,000 woodworking plans you are bound to get some which look a little disorganized but that is understandable as it is very difficult to place all these plans into their proper categories. Secondly, it might take you a little longer to do the downloads on because of the size of them. But the members area include an option to upgrade to the DVD so you can save time on downloading. I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars. Here's the bottom line: If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you SHOULD use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Check the site: ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info )

Fixed Base
With a fixed base router, the depth of cut is set before you turn the router on. The lack of a plunge mechanism tends to make these routers lighter and less expensive.

Plunge
A plunge router allows you to adjust the depth of cut while the router is turned on. This feature can come in handy when you need to make multiple passes on a board, taking off a little more wood with each pass. Plunge routers often have depth stops that can be used to accurately plunge the router to the appropriate depth while in use. Plunge routers can also be used to cut mortises, stopped grooves, dados, and incised letters (with special jigs). However, the plunge mechanism adds weight to the router.

Agree with just about everyone.....which is best depends on use.
A router has one basic requirement & that is to spin the bits at high speed.
If it is for occasional use , not much sense in overspending ,which is easy to do..
If it is for heavy continuous, professional use......you do get what you pay for.
Also, no sense buying top of the line bits for occaisonal use, but ,bargain bits are not the way to go either.
I have both & use the "good" ones for the" finer" work & buy individual bits as I need them.
Have beat the hell out of a Craftsman ( crap) router for over 30 years.
When it dies, I'd like to get a better one & if I can afford it , will get a "good" one like Porter Cable which has good "outfits" that can be upgraded as needed.
Best regards

Think about how much you are going to use it. also consider the materials it will be used on. For a homeowner, who will be using one spuratically, you don't need a top of the line machine. Get one with good power such as at least 2 HP. Spend money on quality bits. They produce better finishes and help the router by not dragging through cuts. I have a Skil with interchangable bases (fixed and plunge) and I am quite happy with it.

With all due respect "Best" is a relative word. In this forum, as in life away from here everyone has personal favorites; often based on experience with a tool. I agree with answer two in that the bits make the cuts.

Most routers run at 25,000 RPM plus or minus. The issue if one has to define BEST might be reputation of the MFG.; Servicing/parts locations; and again; experience. I rarely choose by brand; but it's common.

Actually I prefer the hand held; as opposed to the router that weighs near as much as a Volkswagon; just for ease of handling and control.

Certainly too is the issue of tools///parts/ components, being outsourced for production, and tagged with a brand name. No offense to anyone.

Finally, and I've "spent" my two cents; there is the issue of it's intended, or assumed use. I think it's safe to say "Stuff wears out". I'm also a firm believer in "One gets what one pays for" and that so often relates here to those who ask CHEAPEST?
