It is a common misconception that the US gets most of its oil from the Middle East. Actually, about 40% of the oil the US uses is produced domestically, but the rest is made up by imports (no, kja63, the US does not have enough to satisfy its needs, and is not prevented from doing so by environmentalists).

The majority of US imports do come from the Middle East, as a whole, but on a country-by-country basis, Canada is the biggest supplier, at about 19%, followed by Saudi Arabia at 14%, Mexico at 12%, and Venezuela and Nigeria at 11% each. These figures were good as of about two months ago. The percentage from Canada has been going up over the last several years, and the percentage from Saudi Arabia has been going down.

Great queston. My first thought was it has to mainly come from the Middle East. But I've looked at a bunch of websites and turns out we get 40% of our oil domestically. The next largest source is Canada! I was really surprised that so much comes from our own country.

I looked at a bunch of websites. The ones I listed seemed the most reliable and the easiest to read. But even the ones I'm not listing said the same as above.

Venezuela, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and the other middle eastern oil producers followed by Nigeria, in that order. Brazil just discovered 8 billion proven barrels. They should become our number one supplier in the coming years. The philosophy of using the world's oil before our own is wise IMHO.

Good question. We actually have enough oil in this country to satisfy our needs. But environmentalists won't let us drill for it. So what oil we have is held in reserve and we buy our oil from Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, etc.
