Why do many conservatives think that anyone who is not a conservative is a liberal? The majority of people seem to be moderate, while those with the largest voice are on the extreme right or left.

"The damaged wheel makes the most noise"

I consider myself to be a moderate Conservative, so maybe I am not the target for this question. I am Pro- Choice, Pro- Stem Cell Research, Pro- Gay Marriage, Pro- Legalization, and Pro- Environment.

I hold this truth to be self-evident:
If you agree 100% with Liberalism or Conservatism, you have stopped thinking for yourself and decided to let Political Parties think for you.
To say the least, it is EXTREMELY unlikely that anyone with well examined beliefs would fall perfectly into Liberalism or Conservatism.

The problem with the Extreme Right and Extreme Left is that they are incapable of thinking for themselves, and therefore rely on beliefs, instead of on the Sciences of Social Study.
They more closely resemble Religious Zealots than Thinkers.

I think that singling out Conservatives is somewhat unfair though. Both sides, as you mention, have extremists who are blind about what the other side sees.

Because that typically is the case. It's a stereotype to be sure, but most of the country either belongs to one party or the other. When discussing politics, it's not like we all have name tags that state our positions on all the various topics. These have to be learned through discussion and not all the information is up front. Typically if someone opposes conservative policy, they are liberal to some extent and vice versa.

Well, 'as usual' when one makes broad generalizations...

Many conservatives probably do not think 'everyone' else is a liberal.

Imagine by the same logic one would state 'many liberals think anyone that is not liberal must be conservative'

I think 'there are outspoken' on each side of the policical spectrum with a large majority somewhere in the middle.

Why do many liberals think that anyone who is not a liberal is a conservative?
Actually, I think a better question is why is it liberals are ashamed of the name and feel like they need to have a number of other labels.

I think it all boils down to this.
Those that subscribe to conservative thought and ideals, for the most part, tend to be satisfied with the term conservative and therefore don't mind the conservative label.
To the contrary, liberal beliefs tend to be collective in nature, anti individual, quirky, excessive and based largely on a feeling that government should be in control of all aspects of their life, not individual personal responsibiliy. In order to constantly redefine themselves and try to justify their beliefs they are constantly referring to themselves by every other name they can come up with.
It's like somone saying they're bisexual and not gay!
Hello!!!!!
That's about it!

Its the same reason that many people think that all conservatives are neo-con nazis. Its gotten to the point in this country where its like two kids in a shouting match. Each raising his or her voice louder and louder in order to be heard. And as the shouting match goes on and on the insults get to be more and more inane and comical. In time their voices will become hoarse and fall to a whisper.-------------------And the voice of reason can be heard once again.

Im about as tired of this as i am sick of political "correctness"

you could ask the same to liberals. you are correct most Americans do lean more to the middle. and it is the extremist mouth pieces and pundits that pit us against ourselves rather then encouraging us to work together.
facts are:
more then half of Americans believe in the right to own firearms
more then half of Americans believe in the right to choose an abortion
more then half of Americans believe in affordable health insurance accessible equally to everyone (not necessarily run by the government)
more then half of Americans believe we need to secure our borders
more then half of Americans believe in capital punishment
more then half of Americans believe we need to fight the war on terrorist
more then half believe Iraq is not that war

there are a very few things that the American people disagree on or won't work to compromise on but our so called political leaders would rather separate us then unite us. it is not in the politicians "own" best interest for the country to run smoothly and without conflict they might actually work them selves out of a job.

Thats a good point. I generally consider myself more liberal, but fiscally conservative...actually, I believe in a fair amount of conservative arguements...especially immigration.

So yeah...conservatives, we are not all extreme leftists, as your are not all right wing cooks.

"We the people" thus know who to blame for being stuck unable to move forward. We do not see our president and his fascist leaning team as being responsible for any problem. The liberal is. The progressive is. The intellectual is. The environmentalist is. The anti-war activist is. The pro-choice people are. The atheist is. The socialist is. The communist is. The terrorist is. Take your pick. Anyone other than the regime is to blame.

Moderates are worse than liberals. They are fence sitters who sway with the political winds and have no convictions to stand on until they can determine just how those winds are blowing. They cannot think for themselves or act for themselves with first finding out what others are doing.

At least with a liberal, you know where they are coming from and what they are going to do.

Why do "some people" deem that all Repblicans are conservative, or "neocon" as the trendy set like to call them ?
