Just keep in mind that the saying most likely means "a friend when YOU ARE in need." It's when you're in need or trouble that your true friends really come through. A more cynical interpretation is that someone seems to become a real friend only when he actually needs/wants something from you. You could probably get a good paragraph out of each interpretation. I'd put the cynical one first to get it out of the way, because it's probably a MISinterpretation. Then use the right transition to move into the other interpretation and dicsuss it with examples, etc. You might even get more than one paragraph out of this interpretation of the saying. There's the basis for the body of your essay. If you need help with the introduction and conclusion, ask again!

Or alternatively those people who are there for you when you really need them are your real friends. There is a recent country song by Tracy Lawrence that really tells it best. Real friends are the ones you can call when you are feeling blue, they are the ones' who drop everything when you need them. I mean really need them, your stuck on the side of the road, you have no where to stay, etc. Watch the video, you might find it inspirational, and then voila, you'll be ready to right that comp. This saying came about because there are people that you only see when they are literally in need of something....anything. These people you don't see other than in passing unless they are having some kind of trouble that you could probably help with. Once the crisis is over, you don't see them anymore.
