It was the British that beat the British. There were no Germans, Italians Spanish Poles or any other nationalities. They were almost all first or second generation British. We have always considered it to be a civil war so where do the Americans get of saying that they threw us out? In there dreams

"Why do the Americans always try to claim that they beat us in the war of Independence?"

Because they did.

"It was the British that beat the British. There were no Germans, Italians Spanish Poles or any other nationalities. They were almost all first or second generation British. We have always considered it to be a civil war so where do the Americans get of saying that they threw us out?"

"In 1775, revolutionaries seized control of each of the thirteen colonial governments, set up the Second Continental Congress, and formed a Continental Army. The following year, they formally declared their independence as a new nation, the United States of America."

We had our own government, army and then we declared independence. From that moment on, we were Americans, regardless of how you see it. The English were trying to reclaim control, not hold onto it. This is why it was not a civil war. Besides, you need to study your history a bit more, because we were aided by allies who also fought against the English, particularly by the Native Americans, French, Spanish and the Dutch.

Get over it. It was along time ago, it is over and we are allies now. There is no use arguing about it, because no one is going to rewrite history to suit your view.

First off, there's this thing called the Declaration of Independence. That's where we began to distance ourselves from you, and become something other than British.

Plus, if it was a Civil War with the British, then who exactly won the War of Independence? The British?

Because there are always two or more sides to the story. I'm an American. I've never heard of it being considered a civil war, but I could certainly see how from your perspective it would be perceived as a civil war.

It would be interesting to compare the text books regarding this war given to students in Britain and the US.

Everyone's got a different spin. I guess we weren't taught is was a civil war because of political reasons.

Yeees, but that is a bit of a sophistication! Even before the war, people from the colonies called themselves Americans, and the declaration of independence specifically disassociated themselves from the British crown.

You do have a point though. Winston Graham made it well in the first of his Poldark Novels;

Coach Passenger 'Ah, back from the Americas? An unpopular War, Sir! I hear the rebels fought like animals!'
Captain Poldark 'No, Sir. They fought like Englishmen. That is why they won.'

Uh...OK someone doesn't know their history. OK when the first settlers came around they named the country "America." So the settlers were called "Americans!" Just like you guys are called "British." So therefore they were no longer British...but Americans. Yeah we did kick y'all's butt. We got our independence and the British lost us as a territory/colony. No civil war about you guys are just made because you lost. (I don't blame you I would be too, if I were you.) But the fact still remains the same. Even other foreign schools teach that the revolutionary war was won by the Americans!!! It isn't taught that it was a civil war.

While much of what you say is true - most of the people in the U.S. at that time had roots in Britain.

It didn't take long for us to figure out that Britain looked to the colony as a cash cow and, like other possessions, intended to tax the bejesus out of us.

We said no.

We fought for independence - and we won.

Quite frankly, if the Brits had fought a real war based on the tactics of the resistance, they probably could have won. We were certainly outnumbered and outgunned. But the Brits had no respect for "guerilla warfare" and ununiformed "militia". They insisted on throwing their poor soldiers out like they had done for generations.....

Bad move. Cornwall and others got what was coming to them......and "won" your defeat at the hands of untrained, inexperienced people who were dammed if they were going to be under British rule anymore.

Get over it.

Think it makes them feel good....Although at the time we were at war in Africa and tensions were afoot against France and Portugal, India was being colonised along with several other places around the world,,and all from a small group of nations (the UK) smaller than most US states,,The Royal Navy were protecting British interests across all corners of the globe so the colonies were just a side line battle for us,,,

Your totally right...but it was the British people who believed in a different kind of government (ansestors of current day americans), who overthrew the British rule (current day british) over current day american terrritory. I get what your saying....a lot of people think that this is the best country in the world....not really. Almost every part of government has scandel, lies and secrets in it. Also, its either people have blind nationalism, or they have no pride at all. Im an american, and i dont think americans are idiots....only their leaders ....

You really need to read your History.....there certainly were a number of Hanovarian troops on the British side. (George111 was Hanovarian or German if you prefer) There were also French mercenaries on the American side....the French Navy also became involved blockading reinforcements from the British side....this is a very brief explanation.....read up on it.
