They are as legitimate as a default can be....
**EDIT**
This is for Snowboard Zombie.
The "exact" number you are searching for is 0!
West Virginia played exactly 0 teams in the top 15. They played South Florida, Rutgers, Cincy, UConn who were all ranked at the time they played, with South Florida being the highest ranked team @ 18. But now only South Florida and Cincy are still ranked @ 21 and 23.

Legit in the screwed up BCS.
Snowboard... WV played 4 ranked teams & only 2 of which are are still ranked now ((USF (25) and Cinncy(20) ). WVU didn't play any top ten teams or as was said even top 15 teams. Like it or not... that is why people are saying it was not as tough as schedule as perhaps others with 1or 2 losses had.

You know, I'm really tired of all this talk about which teams earn their ranking and which ones end up there by default.
If these so-called "powerhouse" football programs played up to their so-called level of greatness, this wouldn't be an issue. Win games. Period. That's all any team has to do. If a team is great and wonderful it wouldn't matter who they are playing or what conference they're in....they ought to WIN.
Now that those teams are not "dominating", people are whining and complaining that other teams (not usually known as powerhouses) are taking the top spots in the rankings.
Don't hate because the small schools and lesser-recognized conferences look halfway decent this year. They're doing three things that everyone else SHOULD have been doing all season: show up, play, and win.
Cheers!

They have earned the right to be #2. What is the problem with all of the fans out there that can not handle the fact that SOMEONE other than the almighty PAC 10 or SEC or ACC is in the position to play and win a national championship?! Each one of these conferences has sucky teams, but no one is seeing this as a problem. We will prove our worth come January. GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!

The Big East is far from the worst conference in the country right now (that would be the Big Ten). They probably wouldn't have only one loss if they played in the SEC but no one would have only one loss if they played in the SEC (including SEC teams, since none of them did this year).
Top 15 is a nice convenient cutoff as it puts one of OSU's opponents in that group (Illinois), but West Virginia's overall strength of schedule is higher than Ohio State's. Mountaineers faced two teams currently in the Top 25, including the only team to beat them (South Florida).
They're as legitimate as anyone else is in the chaotic 2007 season.

Both. I'm an Eer fan and I'll give you both sides.
Default--> they could be considered this because they have a loss and they wouldn't be up there if other teams hadn't lost too because they aren't as well known as other perennial powers.
Legit---> they have the talent, coaching, and the ability to beat ANY team in the country. They are that damn good. Lightning fast with a much improved defense.
Go Eers!!!!!

They are the legitamate #2 team in the country. Thier only loss was against south florida and USF was as high as #2. When missouri is beat by oklahoma they will be #1. They have 2 great players in Sleve Slaten and Pat White, so they have a chance to beat any team.

Are you kidding me? You need to check your "knowledge". We played multiple teams in the top 15. Exact number, not so sure, but we did.
