I have a toilet in a closet in my entrance. The tank leeks and the water has been shut off. I want to remove it so I can use the closet as a coat closet. What do I do with the drain? Just cover it up? Won't it still bring up gases from the septic?

You can find "test plugs" at Home Centers. They are installed in the pipe and seal it off. Then you could cover it.

You can cover it with a cap or plug (not a rag or soda bottle)
However, the flange sits higher than the level of the floor. If the closet bend (drain pipe) is ABS (black plastic) and you can access it, it would be better to cut it off somewhere below floor level and glue an ABS cap on it. Also, make sure you cap the supply at the angle stop (valve) or remove the stop and cap the pipe (with water main closed)

Yes. You have to cap it or it'll smell horrible. You can find the parts at a home center. Easy Job.

You would plug the drain with a tight fitting rag, then seal it off with plaster (or wax, or concrete, you get the idea), then cover it up.

Yes , you have to cap it.
Parts are at home depot or a simple job for a plumber.
