I have a brand new laptop with one of those friggin divided drives ( done for safety, blah blah). It runs vista, which I like fine. The drives are labled OS and Data. The problem is with the OS. When I got the unit that drive was nearly full already. I tried to install all programs that didn't come with the computer on the data drive but you still need a certain amount of space to operate the computer. I deleted some unneeded programs like Roxio disc creator which took up a lot of space and deleted and reinstalled some programs to the other drive. This seemed to help a bit. The thing is if i do the littlest thing, like install desktop weather ( which incidentally will not run properly) the free memoryt is just sucked up. Its not a big file at all. The space available went from 700mb to 32mb! WTF! Do you tink its Vista causing te trouble? Should I look into getting vista replaced wit Xp? Help!!!

If the notebook came with a Vista Disk, why not extend the OS partition. The Vista disk will make this pretty easy....Norton Partition Magic is also a rather straight forward tool to use.

The divided drive you refer to is a Raid 0 configuration as all of the computer companies are getting to cheap to furnish the CDs with the OS, Applications, and Drivers on them. The OS drive should not be used to store anything on as it is for doing a format of your data part and then it will restore the computer to it's original configuration from the OS partition. I don't like them either and tried to get my last computer with two stand alone hard drives like the previous one as I prefer the CDs so I can do what I want. They refused to sell one that way any more. I don't like Vista at this point and had them install XP Pro, as there are just to many problems with Vista. Any new OS, you should wait at least for the first service pack to be issued and preferably the 2nd before buying it. As for the OS part being nearly full, it should be as it is only for storing the stuff to restore your computer to its original configuration if you have to format the data sector of the disk.

it is a good idea to separate hard disk in various partition ..
what is the size of your OS partition ..by default Vista should not take more than 2 GB ,

default programs may take abt 1 Gb ..so if your partition size is more than 4 GB , you should have enough space...

try cleaning your temp files..
you can do it using ccleaner :http://www.ccleaner.com/download

also

for optimal performance , more than 1 GB space should be free in OS drive..

its not a memory issue.. its storage capacity. i dont think vista is causing it... you need to unload some of the data to conserve disk space. your problem is not your PC or the OS, its the small disk space that you have... oh, and yes... it is for safety to have another drive other than the drive for the OS, dont undermine it.

Vista is a total waste..it sucks up power big time..I suggest to reformat your hard drive and install xp...if the hard drive is close to its full capacity things will run slowly.....backup your stuff first as reformatting will erase everything...
