A while later the man behind the desk realized the room was only $25. So he sent the bell boy to the guys room with $5. On the way the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split $5 evenly, between 3 men so he gave them a $1 and kept $2 for himself. This meant that the men each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27, add the $2 which the bellboy kept and that is a total of $29. Where is the other $1.

There's no other dollar.. The way you narrated the story makes the reader believe that there is an extra dollar.. It has a wrong algorithm in deducing the remaining money..

This question has a very easy answer. The actual amount paid by the guys was 27 instead of 30. They need to pay only 25 so 2 Rs went to the bellboy. Which gives the correct equation. Instead of 27+2=29 it will be 27-2=25

You have freeked me out with this question!! I am now going to work it out on paper, by which time someone far cleverer than me will have worked it out!!! Why is this question not worrying other people??? The men only technically paid 9 each for the room, thats 27, the bellboy keeps 2 thats 29....WHERE IS THE OTHER 1????????

this is cute but i think i can explain it to the point where it makes sense...(i hope) ok the confusion is where everyone thinks that 3/30=10 (which is correct!) but once the man behind the desk realized it was $25 you DO NOT divide 30 by 3...its actualy is 3/25 which is 8.33... well...

8.33 x 3 = 25
25+3 (1 dollar times 3 men)=28
28+2(that the bellboy kept)= 30!!!
Eurecka!

To figure really what they paid you would divide 25 by 3 and get 8.33333 and then you add the $1 they each got back getting 9.3333 and multiply that by 3 and you get 28 and you add the 2 and you get the original amount of $30.
