Can you watch yourself die in a dream or will you wake up BEFORE you see yourself dead? I'm not asking about seeing your own funeral, but your actual dream death and your dream method of death.

Yes, it is possible to dream of your own actual death.

My personal death dream happened 33 years ago and it is still vivid. Woke up in such an upset state that I couldn't speak or go to school for 3 days. I told the whole dream to my mother and she was very calm and believed me, which helped. She said to not try and interpret it as a premonition, a curse or whatever and see what happened. Nothing ever has even been a trace of what I dreamt decades later. In fact, eventually I had dreams of immediate family members dying and it directly had to do with whoever I loved deeply. Dreams rarely "predict" reality. People who have strong premonitions are awake when it occurs. That's my experience at least. I dream volumes that never happen past or present. My husband has premonitions at odd moments during the morning that really happen about 85% of the time.

Yes, I've died a few times in my dreams. Usually, once that happens, I get to see how the story unfolds for the characters in the dream. No longer limited by a physical body I can roam the landscape to follow the action.

One time, I died of torture (I don't remember the torture, only that it was part of the story) and ended up haunting the building trying to warn others, trying to be heard by the living. Probably a lot of symbolism in THAT dream. ;-)

I doubt it. Ultimate human experiences like one's own death ( or birth ) are veiled in symbols. Our consciousness always positions itself within a body, rather than external to it. We don't even have objective dream visions of ourselves in ordinary activities, such as lying in bed asleep, let alone dying.

We have this innate contradiction: an instinct of survival and self-preservation, versus our logical projected knowledge that some day we will die. This is a painful "cognitive dissonance". (Leon Festinger). This unacceptability of our own deaths causes us to block direct visualization of it.
