I think they counted down to the winter solstice. Usually December 21 or 22, in the Northern Hemisphere. The shortest day/longest night. Winter solsice is believed to be a celebration fo rebirth.
Funny how many cultures today have celebrations around the same time.

No, as the Gregorian calendar had not yet been invented. Many cultures only use the western calendar to ease business transactions and communications, otherwise their calendars have no concept of a BC or AD. The same would be true of early cultures.
