Saw this film again last night on E4. I always thought that Leonard's wife survived the attack by the burglars but then died of an insulin overdose as she attempted to make Leonard generate new memories - hence Leonard basically repressed this memory.
However I have noticed that alot of people seem to think that she actually died when the burglars attacked her and Leonard and thus John G lied in his final scene with Leonard to mess with his head.
Whats your take on this? Please provide reasoning. Top film!

You have to decide for yourself. Personally I think she did survive otherwise it wouldnt be a ''Twist'' and the whole scene would not make sense. The way he reacted (flashback-head shaking-denial-alternative flashback) and the way John G said it makes me think that he did surpress his thouhgts. Also he sets up to kill John G so when he said it, some memories came back and in the car he closed his eyes to forget again. Maybe Sammy's wife did that and Leonard's wife picked up the idea from the story and ''remember Sammy'', had a lot more meaning when he first got it.

Many people did not understand that part by you are correct..
His story about the other guy is in his head because he wanted to forget the truth (hence the tattoo on his hand about the other guy)..
The wife survived the attack, but did not believe it when he didn't have his memory.. so she tested him with the insulin injections... "John G." had the picture of one of his kills with him.. it was not a lie.. Leonard see's the picture but tells himself that he would rather keep doing it.. so he destroyed the picture.
