Way back in the day when it was started, the NFL asked every team if they wanted to play on Turkey day and only Dallas and Detroit said they did. After a few times it just became a tradition.

It's not only those two teams anymore. The NFL added a third Thanksgiving night game last year to the schedule (Denver at KC last year, Indy at Atlanta this year). Detroit has had a longer tradition of it than Dallas, if mainly for the fact that Detroit's been in the league longer.

Traditiion....years ago the league asked all the teams if they would want to host a Thanksgivig game and Dallas and Detroit were the only 2 teams who wanted it....

because it is tradition Dallas has played Thanksgiving day since I could remember....

They started the tradition and are given the rights to play . OL TEX SCHRAMM [cowboys president ] way back when................... got the NFL to go along with the idea , more EXPOSURE for the LEAGUE !! SINCE DALLAS AND DETROIT AGREED TO DO IT , THEY GET 1ST DIBBS !!!!!!!!!!!!
