Alone.

While your theory ("a loan") is interesting, it does not fit the lyrics of the song (for example "I never got a chance to see him.")

Basically, the "papa" had no dealings with his family (or families, as the song says).

So, they are left ALONE (they are without him) and they are LEFT ALONE (they no longer have to think about him or hear "bad things" about him).

Alone fits a lot better. alone as in without a father or even the hope of him coming back.

I would say alone vs. a loan -- otherwise this would have been indicated as such.
