I'm planning on going to Thailand in April, for two weeks and then going to Cairns for a two week trip down the gold coast, ending in Sydney with the intention of working there for a year.

The flights at the moment are around £700, but I've been advised that if I wait until January they will go down and there will be sales as I'm landing in Aussie winter-time so not as many people want to fly there at that time.

Is there any truth in this or shoudl I just book my flights now?

Thanks!

The best time to book a flight is prior to it taking off.

Book early for cheap flights. Get online and check the different airlines months in advance. Be flexible as to dates and times - flying the day before or the day after you want to go could be cheaper and flights leaving at 3am are usually cheaper than those leaving at more civilised times.

There are no January sales for anything apart from package deals.

By the way, April might be getting towards winter in southern Australia but it is the start of the dry season in the north and that is when the greatest demand is on in Cairns. It is still warm in southern Australia in April and there are plenty of tourists.

So sorry to tell you but everyone who has told you to wait last minute to book flights is so not true . i work in a travel agent and have worked at Manchester Airport all in the last 12 years. All schedule flights come on sale 11 months in advance so the earlier you book the cheaper the flights. if you go to the airport on the day then you will have to wait around until a flight becomes available but you dont get them cheaper.
The sale does start in January but only on package holidays , even low cost flights e.g easyjet, jet2 and ryanair there prices go up nearer the time, the only flights that can sometimes be rock bottom at the last minute are charter flights e.g thomas cook, my travel and thomson,so good luck, i would book them now as they will be more than £1000 in april.

Wait for the sales. I have been to Australia and New Zealand to see family many times and have always got a good deal from either www.ba.com or www.qantas.co.uk

I paid £560 in January 2005 and went to NZ, stopping in Hollywood on the way there and New York on the way back.

Try and go on a flight that departs LHR late at night, when others don't want to travel, and you won't lose too much awake time in an aircraft. Thai airways are OK, I've heard, but you'll do better with BA or Qantas. Singapore Air are great, too, but probably don't do LHR - Bankok direct.

Enjoy your trip.

In Sydney you can enjoy the natural beauty. This place was the city's best-known landmark just before construction of the Opera House. Reinforced by massive dual piers at each end, it was integrated 1932 and stays the world's largest metal arch link, joining the harbour's north and south shores in a single curve increasing 134 metros over the water. How brave are you and how set in stone are your travel arrangements.
The nearer flight day gets the cheaper unsold seats become. And on the day you could pay one tenth of the original price or of course could end up flight less...
So it depends how your bravery pans out.
Another thing you can do is join lots of Airline networks and ask them to email you flight deals and then compare daily and pick prices when you are happy with the price. You will notice as the mails come in that they get cheaper and cheaper etc.... I have just been offered flights to Malta from gatwick for 25 pence....
Good luck

I have found whenever I have travelled either overseas or with in Australia, you get the cheaper seats by booking as early as possible. Not waiting for the last minute.

Travelling in Australia, the airlines have "early bird" specials all year round, this means booking early to get the cheap seats.
