There are orange- and citrus-based glue, grease, and guck removers/cleaners on the market which are very handy. I don't know what the names would be in the U.S.; there's one made by Saratoga over here called "Out!" (or the latest version: "Out 2"). It's sold in hardware stores.

After removing the glue with the cleaner, I wash the jar in warm, soapy water to remove any residues.

keep it in hot soapy water even longer to get rid of the sticky...you can also try rubbing alcohol...either way you will probably have to scrub off some of the glue...i actually used a butter knife down the side the last time i needed to do that. good luck to you!

A hair dryer works well. It softens the glue whereby you can scrape it off pretty easy, then warm soapy water should do the trick.
