An adjustment or two at the Chiropractor's office is the best thing. Next I'd take some Tylenol or ibuprofen. Sore or stiff necks are caused from pressure nerves in the cervical spine. That pressure is usually associated with tension or copntraction of the muscles in the neck and shoulders.

Once you can move freely again, one thing you can do to help aviod it in the future is to stretch and exercise those muscles regularly. Another thing you want to be aware of is exposure to cool or cold tempatures or actively moving air across your neck and shoulders. I used to work outside all day. Sometimes I would go home, take a shower and collapse on the bed, directly in the path of the AC vent. 9 out of 10 times I would wake up with a sore neck.
Hope that helps.

A massage would probably help in the short term or a heat patch. But also you could look into how you are getting it, usually its something to do with how you sleep and how many pillows you sleep on, changing something small like that can make all the difference some times.

massage it or have someone massage it for you and heat works great and if you have a friend who has taken masage classes deeptissue masages wont feel great at the time but once they are done the pain just goes away it is great or also having your neck adjusted by a chiropractor might help aswell

Have you tried a heating pad? Or a hot bath? Also, sounds like you might need some anti-inflammatory (over the counter) drugs such as ib profen, or Aleve.

Cheers

3 steps
1 lay flat on the floor.
2 a towl around the back of your neck
3 hold each side of the towl and pull up one side at a time as you gently turn your head right and left.
it works! painful at first

Without wanting to appear rude..... a smack in the mouth
