Yes, I agree, eating spaghetti in a restaurant can be a nightmare if table manners have been deeply ingrained, but personally, I always say that if I've paid for the food then I'm going to enjoy it, in spite of what people might think of my eating technique.

One way of eating spaghetti without slurping it everywhere, and still getting a good mouthful, is to take a large spoon and a fork; twist the spaghetti around the fork, using the spoon to stop the spaghetti unravelling and falling off before you put it in your mouth.

Holding a round (soup) spoon in your left hand (if you're right handed) horizontally just above the food, pick up a few strands of spaghetti with your fork and then hold the fork with its tines into the spoon. Twist the strands around the fork until you have an amount of coiled spaghetti that is not attached to any on the plate, lean forward and eat off the fork.

No mess, no embarrassment and you look like you know what you are doing.

I'm hungry now, and might make it for dinner tonight!!

Spaghetti, like any other Italian food was designed to be enjoyed, not fussed over. At the italian table, getting a bit on your face and the odd slurp shows the cook you are truely enjoying your meal. That said, spaghetti being one of my favorite meals, I have no problem eating spaghetti out. Anyone who doesn't want to see a bit of tomato on my face can kindly look the other way.

It's sad to think that only central and northern reaches of western culture are 'table manners' so strict. In most of the world, if you don't slurp your food and get a bit on your face, it is thought that you did not like the food.

To expand on Lefty, place the fork through the spaghetti in the bowl of the spoon. Then use the spoon or the side of the plate to cut any excess.

Bollocks to that!! Spaghetti is messy - end of story. If you want to try and look ladylike you could try chopping it up into teenyweeny bits (like you do for toddlers) or twisting it round your fork like the Italians do, but it takes some practise! Alternatively just order something else.....

Spaghetti is a mess no matter how ya slice it.

I eat it the classiest way I know, no hands, just shove my face into the plate.

If people around me don't like it, oh well, go eat at Taco Bell for all I care.

The polite way is the Italian way. Lean a bit over your plate, roll a small amount onto your fork and insert into mouth, chew, swallow and wash it down with a healthy gulp of Piedmonte rosso.

...we don't use spoons.... !

Yes there is, you have to make sure its wrapped around your fork properly so it doesn't untangle before it gets to your mouth, I'm an expert at it been taught by my Italian grandparents from an early age.
