Well, everyone will tell you that you have to try some real KC BBQ while you are here! I and all of my family and coworkers like Oklahoma Joe's (http://www.oklahomajoesbbq.com) the best -- and we've all tried a lot of BBQ! The original location in a gas station is the best (they give you more meat on your sandwich!) but the new Olathe one is pretty good too! I'd recommend either the beef brisket or "Smokie Joe" sandwich, and try the french fries -- they're the best fries in the city! (And make sure you dip the fries in BBQ sauce, not ketchup! ;) )

Fiorella's Jack Stack (http://www.jackstackkc.com/) is probably my second favorite BBQ place. It's a little more expensive, and the downtown location has a very nice atmosphere that you wouldn't expect in a BBQ restaurant! Eat early or make reservations on weekends! I recommend the beef brisket, and they have a wonderful dessert with warm chocolate cake and vanilla bean ice cream. (I don't drink, but when I took my aunt and uncle here, they were impressed with the wine list and the service -- and they are from San Francisco and are used to very nice restaurants!)

Many people will also recommend Arthur Bryant's (http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com/) since it was KC's first BBQ restaurant. Most people I know (myself included) don't really like it though -- the meat is always very fatty, and their original sauce is watery, vinegary, and gritty. The Sweet and Bold sauce is a little better. Their fries are cooked in lard which unfortunately my Kosher friend didn't realize until after he ate there!

Gate's BBQ (http://www.gatesbbq.com/) is also usually recommended, and I think it's pretty good but not the best. The sauce has a very strong celery seed flavor to it which makes it a little different. Also, the people at the register usually yell at you to ask you what you want as soon as you walk in the door! So it's kind of annoying if you prefer to look over a menu for a while...

If you like Chinese food, try Bo Ling's (http://www.bolings.com/). They are a KC chain and are the best Chinese restaurants my husband and I have been to -- and we've tried a lot! (He grew up eating at Chinese restaurants once a week!) The Plaza location has dim sum although we've never tried it. All of their locations have great food though.

If you like Mongolian grills (essentially a build-your-own stir fry), Genghis Khan (http://www.visitkc.com/visitor_info/dining_advanced.cfm?ID=10278) is by far the best in KC -- much better (and cheaper) than the big chains like BD's and Hu Hot! The original location is near the KU Medical Center, but the new location in Zona Rosa (off I-29) is just as good.

Garozzo's (http://www.garozzos.com/catering.php) is good for Italian and are known for their several different varieties of chicken spedini. Just don't get the spinach ravioli because the portion is ridiculously small!

A good resource for finding some nice upscale restaurants is the KC Restaurant Guide: http://www.kcrestaurantguide.com/

If you like art museums, check out the Nelson Atkin's Museum near the Plaza (http://www.nelson-atkins.org/). Pick out your favorite kinds of art and look at them first -- it's very tiring to try to go through the whole museum in a day!

For upscale shopping and/or nice restaurants, visit the Country Club Plaza (http://www.countryclubplaza.com/). If you're coming near Christmastime, go at night and see all the Christmas lights! The Plaza lights are a big thing in KC and there's always a large lighting ceremony on Thanksgiving. The JC Nichols fountain on the Plaza is an icon for KC -- you'll usually see it during all the televised Chiefs and Royals games when they break for commercial!

Unfortunately I don't drink so I can't recommend bars or wine, but hopefully this will give you a start! Hope you have fun while you're in KC! :)

This depends entirely on what you like to do. I like museums, so I would recommend the Nelson-Atkins museum of art and the World War I memorial and museum.

Most people might say "If you're in KC, you have to eat steak and BBQ." There are plenty of places for that, but if you're feeling like venturing outside of rookie territory then you will probably want a little more than that. Here's a good resource for all things Kansas City. Search the restaurant guide.

Italian: Garozzo's in the River Market, Lidia's in the Crossroads District or Carmen's in Brookside.

Steak: My favorite is Hereford House, but there are plenty of others.

BBQ: Jack's Stack is good, but Gate's or Bryant's is more authentic.

If all else fails, I have never heard of a woman who didn't just love La Bodega.

Wine: Joe D's in Brookside, Le Fou Frog in the River Market, JJ's in the Plaza.

Go to Oklahoma Joes. Get fries there with your meal.

Go to Carmens in Brookside.

Go see the Plaza at night with the lights it looks so pretty! Also hit the 810 zone while your there. Really good bar.

Get Minsky's pizza. My favorite is hamburger with the honey wheat crust.

You dont have to but if you have an extra day or so go to the Legends or Zona Rosa. They are really fun.

Have fun!
