I am olny getting like 15 miles to the gallon and thats highway miles. Going to get some fuel injector cleaner because I just filled up tank. It has like 85000 miles, is it time for a tune up? My oil has been changed recently, but not sure about air filter. Just trying to get some fairly inexpensive tips on (or as inexpensive as possible) as to what i can/should do.

Trading my Escape in is not an option. I am not an idiot I realized that gas mileage wuld not be as good as a car when I bought this vehicle, but I should still get more than 15 miles to the gallon.

If you think the engine needs a clean it'd probably be better to just try running it on premium unleaded for a while and see what the extra detergent in that does to it.

Modern vehicles with fuel injected engines don't need a tune up in the usual sense since the timing doesn't go out though fluids, filters and spark plugs (not to mention the timing belt) do need to be changed every so often so make sure you continue to maintain it by the book.

Having a mechanic look at your vehicle might be a good idea in case there is something wrong that is preventing it from doing well but in the end you'll probably just have to adjust your driving style.

Getting a better vehicle would of course be a solution but you want inexpensive and that won't be inexpensive.

Oh and don't bother with any of the aftermarket fuel saving devices that you'll find in shops or advertised or wherever, they don't work (except for getting those selling them rich).

Was it getting better mileage when you first bought it? A clogged airfilter and a clogged fuel filter will deff cause crappy mileage... as well as worn sparkplugs... You might want to consider purchasing a k&n airfilter as well... might see 1/2-1mpg better mileage... As a rule of thumb with todays crappy gas you want to change out your fuel filter every 15-20k or so...

Quality gas is another thing that will help you out... dont buy substandered gas from am pm or arco... Also buy the quality of gas that is required, should say on the fuel door... if premuim is required and you go to arcco and buy the cheap cheap stuff you will notice a difference in mileage...

the first person is right. i've read many articles of groups who have tested various products and tricks that supposively improve gas millage. the results? none of them worked, and the few that did you only saw a mile or two extra.

if you need a big vehicle, that is unfortunate, but the fact of the matter is, suvs are gas guzzlers. i agree fully, the only thing you can do is buy something smaller, or go with a hybrid. and the fact of the matter is, vehicles lose gas milage over time do to wear and tear.

a lesson well learned in life, theres more than just a sticker price to consider, especialy when you are dealing with luxery items.

Simple. Sell it and get a car that's fuel efficient. No matter how many tune ups you do. The most you can probably save is maybe 1 or 2 miles. Escape is a gas guzzler, period.

do a tune up and make sure everything is in working order. Escapes get much better mileage than that
