Richard Killeen was born in Auckland in 1946 and graduated
from the University of Auckland with a Diploma of Fine Arts in
1966. He worked part-time as a sign writer with his father
from 1967, a job that was to play an important role in the
development of his painting style. He began working as a fulltime
artist in 1981.
In 1976 Killeen won the Benson and Hedges Art Award and
received a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council Grant. He travelled
in Europe and the United States for 12 months. He has
exhibited regularly within New Zealand and internationally
since 1967 and is represented in most major public
collections.
Book of the Hook is a mature work by an established New
Zealand artist. Killeen worked through many painting styles,
from Geometric Symbolism to Realism and first painted onto
aluminium in the 1970s. Killeen also used dice and cards to
make chance paintings during the 1970s. Chance relates to the
variable configuration of this work. He began working with cut
outs in 1978. These soon became a recognisable style.
Early examples of Killeen’s cut out works display a
preoccupation with largely archaeological and biological
forms. Later works, such as the Book of the Hook, became
more painterly and often played around with the idea of
mythologizing history, by creating a composition in which
actual archaeological objects and imagined shapes are treated
with equality. Killeen has referred to his later works as being
made up of a number of ‘signs’, which refer to people, actions
or places, but can be interpreted in many different ways.
