I have figured out how to type letters in Word ( but I can't adjust my margins!) , I worked out how to send an e-mail, but that's about it. I want to learn how to copy and paste, create templates, resize pictures - LOADS of things.

Can anyone recommend a good book, or Cd-Rom where I can learn basics, jargon, shortcuts, tips etc.

Our local school runs a basic computer class for adults but it is always over-subscribed, and I haven't been able to get a place this year.

You must have plenty of local community centres and village halls where basic IT courses are held. The help menu in Word will help you a lot, but with margins, its File, Page Set up. You should firstly change your margins top, bottom, left and right to 2.5 cm (the left and right will be 3.17cm which is American setting) and hit thedefault button so every document unless you specify otherwise has the 1" margin all the way round. Cut, copy and paste, on your toolbars you have the icons for those. What you need to do is move your mouse over all the icons and a label will come up telling you what they do. You have to remember though, working with a computer is a partnership, but you are the senior partner, it will do what you ask of it, if it knows what you want. So, if you want to make text bigger or bold, you have to highlight that part of the text before you click on the font size to make it bigger or toclick on the B icon for bold. If you need anything specific, feel free to email me. I am an IT tutor.

What you need is a friend who is willing to tutor you. Obe on one is the best way to learn. Back in 1995, I took a basic computer class at the local jr college and also a basic word processing class at the local high school. Both were very helpful. Check around, try the library they sometimes have classes too. Also each program has a help section.

The best way to learn how to use a computer is to try out everything in the computer. you can not harm the computer software in any way by trying new things but make sure that u make a back up of the document u will be using 4 practice.
you can also visit the macrosoft office web sit, u will find a few useful tips that may also help.

there are loads of tutorials online you just have to look for them. There are also courses you can do like clueless about computers. This course teaches you the basics and you can expand from there. This course may be free in your area so best thing to do is go to your local college for more info.

Trial and error is better than any manual as what you learn tends to stick dont worry you cant break your computer by messing around on it
