I know this is confusing, so I'll try my best to not be with my explanation. Tennessee has 3 overall loses, 2 within the conference. Tenn's out of conference loss was to Cal, and their two in-conference loses were to Florida and Alabama. Georgia only has 2 overall loses, but they both were conference loses. One to South Carolina, and the other to Tennessee. Now, Tenn and Georgia are tied in CONFERENCE play, and since Tenn won the match up between the two, Tenn trumps Georgia for the top spot in the conference even though Georgia has a better overall record and is ranked much higher. Hope that helps.

The BCS and conference championship games have nothing to do with each other. The SEC Championship game is about an SEC record. Say Georgia played 3 out of conference games and 8 in conference games. Now imagine they won all of their games with the exception of 2 in conference games at the very beginning of the season. That puts them at two loses in conference and the rest of the season for them to impress voters and rise in the rankings.
Now imagine Tennessee has the same schedule, only they loses the 3 out of conference games and win all of their in conference games. They have a worse overall schedule and are a three loss team compared to Georgia's two loses, however they have a better in conference record. They would play for the SEC Championship game. This is what could have happened with Michigan this year.
I know this isn't the actual scenario, and I could tell you exactly what happened, but I don't have the time to look up exactly what happened. However, this is how the current system works. Unfortunately, not all conferences have championship games. On one hand it's another chance to impress voters before the final ballots are cast. On the other hand, Georgia may benefit because they will not have to play LSU. If they ended up losing to (still a very powerful) LSU, they would have no shot at a national championship game. Right now, they are counting on Mizzou and WVU to lose, which probably won't happen, but they are "blessed" none-the-less. Of course if they beat LSU, they could jump Ohio State... but I get ahead of myself...

The same reason the nfl is more popular than MLB. Baseball is a slow and boring sport and there are about 100 too many games. Football, its a short season, less games mean every game matters. So, since the pro version is much more popular, of course the college version would be more popular than its equivalent in minor leagues. While a baseball game is still fun to actually be at, football is something that is enjoyable to watch on TV, while baseball isnt. Football is by far America's pastime and people who say otherwise should stop living in the 30's. And as for why college has so many die hard fans, it has a lot to do with geography. For example, look at USC, Oklahoma, and Alabama. There is no pro team in the area or even state for some of them. People grow up in the state and support their team.

OK, here is how it goes. After Georgia lost to Tennessee, they didn't lose another game afterward beating teams like Florida, Kentucky, and Auburn. This helped them continue to move up in the polls while all teams ahead of them were losing. Georgia failed to win their division because of the loss to Tennessee therefore creating more controversy in the BCS. I still feel that if West Virginia and Missouri lose this weekend then Georgia will not play in the title game if LSU wins the SEC. It would be a big jump for LSU to make in that case but I think that if the dominate Tennessee which beat Georgia, then they will move up in the polls ahead of Georgia, so Georgia's chances are slim. As of now, I still have West Virginia and Ohio State as my top two contenders for the National Title.

If you lose late in the season and you were ranked high you're screwed. That happened to Oregon, LSU and Kansas after very good seasons. It's doesn't have too much to do with the BCS really as it's always been this way. It's not just Georgia that stands to benefit from this, and other teams have snuck in to the title game in the past. But I agree with you that it doesn't make much sense to give a team the National Title if they don't win their conference.

Well, Georgia beated Georgia Tech, but LSU losed close game to Arkansas.. the winner got moved up the rank where as the losers dropped down. The last time, the team that didn't win their own conference but went to BCS championship game is in 2001, Nebraska got in BCS game but Oklahoma the BIg 12 champ did not..and If WVU and Mizzou lose..well It's Deja Vu all over again.

um UT beat UGA so even though UT has more overall losses they both have one conference loss so head to head competition breaks that tie and as mentioned UT beat UGA... that is why UT is in the conference championship game and UGA isn't...
has nothing to do with the BCS... it's all in how the SEC is set up...
personally I feel that conferences should not be permitted to be so large that all teams cannot play each other during the season... there should be no divisions and NO "conference championship" game... Oklahoma already beat Missouri so why should they have to beat them again to win the Big 12?
again, this is NOT a BCS problem...

Georgia has higher record win than Tenn, but tie at conference and Tenn beat Georgia so Georgia can't play at SEC champ. BCS is kind of chaos in many years, so I am not surprise when many fans are upset about what teams will play for NC.

So how would you feel if WVU lost the first game of the season to UConn. Then UConn goes undefeated and is #1 in the polls. WVU wins the rest of their games and is #2. If that scenario, should WVU not play in the championship game just because they didn't win their conference?

BCS standings are based on this seasons current records and last seasons as well. Georgia is up that far because of what they have done the last few seasons. I think this is bullshit too. Whoever created the system for calculating BCS rankings was probably a money man and not a football man.
