My Belarussian friend, over here on a student visa, has been convicted of drink driving. Idiot. He needs to drive to his part time job in a hospital. Can he a) use a moped? b) use his Russian driving licence? I imagine not but thought I'd investigate...

Goodness me, I asked for an answer, not a ****ing judgement! Thanks guys. For those of you who offered your opinions of what he's done, I agree with you, he's an idiot. He has a problem and is addressing it. Yes, I am a good friend. I prefer to see the good in people and nurture it rather than condemn further.

Not legally, no.

The result of the conviction is to be stripped of your privilege to drive. That another country gave him a license is irrelevant.

You are a very understanding friend. I can see the difficulty your friend is facing but, I think you are right, he proabably wouldn't be able to use his Russian licence or drive a moped in the UK. Drink driving is a very serious crime and the police will have the inforamtion on file for whatever vehicle he is using. If he were to have an accident or get caught, the penanlties would be very severe. If you have access to a library, there is a book called Police Law which may have the information you are looking for.

No. Whatever licence he tries to use, driving a motor vehicle (including a moped) in the UK whilst disqualified by a UK court is an offence, for which the offender can be arrested and imprisoned.

Disqualified means that the court has ordered him not to drive, it doesn't mean "don't use that licence".

Your friend is indeed an idiot, and a danger to the public. That's why the court disqualified him.

Hello,

(ANS) Bear in mind its NOT the nationality of the person who's been convicted that matters in this case. If your friend was convicted for drink driving (excess alcohol in the blood stream which was proved by a breath test or blood or urine sample). Then its UK Law that was broken and thats what matters most here.

Answer is No! a) he would definitely be braking the law & endangering others if he did. b) No! same he would be braking UK law & endangering others as well as himself.

**He should have thought about the consequences of braking the law in this country before drinking & driving. He should accept & take responsability for his actions & now use public transport or get a lift from a friend if possible.

Tell your friend to use his time while travelling on the Bus, because no, he can't use a motor vehicle while banned, to think about what a dick he's been. Drink drivers really F*** me off, it's just the most selfish and wreckless thing to do, it's bad enough if, in an accident they killed themselves but if they killed someone else just because they couldn't be bothered to order a taxi.... well lets just say that if i was a judge they wouldn't see sunlight for a very longtime.

Sorry to rant as it's not your fault and you indeed called your friend an idiot but i've no real sympathy for him, whether he can get to his job or not.

No the terms of a driving ban are that YOU (the person stood before the magistrate) are forbidden from using a motorised vehicle on a public road in the UK.

If you are then stopped whilst driving, you have broken the terms of your British license and will have to go back to court for driving whilst disqualified.

No. Doesn't matter if he uses another driving license or drives a moped. He is banned.

NO! If you are disqualified from driving you cannot use any license. You can use it back in russia and they cannot take that license from u or add point. But you are disqualified, no the license.

His best shot is to take the bus. Other wise he may find himself on a flight back home!
