The other day my boyfriend got a 2cm laceration on his upper lip and received stitches at the ER, today the stitches are noticeably looser. Is this okay or should we go back to the Doctor? Thank you for your time.

It may appear as though the sutures are loosening after a day or two. However, what is happening is the inflammation of the tissue has subsided and the stitches appear to have come loose. By now, the laceration should appear to be healing and the edges of the wound should be together. If the wound should reopen, get back to the doctor.

Since it has only been one day, to be safe I'd go back. Keep in mind though at the emergency room you can ask for a plastic surgeon to do the stitches..it is well worth it if you do now want scars. If you are going to see a doctor, I suggest you go to a plastic surgeon so you have lesser of a scar once it heals, but I do it asap.

It's not quite a normal thing.I suggest you to contact your Doctor and seek his advice lest you get a prominent mark there which may widen further later on.Please don't delay.I don't think you will get a secondary infection though, because I am sure you know how to take care of the area clean and free from exposure to outside virus . I guess the Doctor has given you some ointment to be applied locally to escape any unforeseen infection and marks.

Stitches shouldn't loosen even if the swelling has gone down. They probably used nylon sutures which have a great tendency to become undone if not knotted properly.
