This guy absolutely disgusts me. Would it be appropriate to call authorities and tip them off? Would the girl need to testify? Should I mind my own business or should I make sure something happens to this pedophile?

This is my neighbor's child, who I'm very good friends with. I've seen her leave in his car in the middle of the night, and he brings beer over a lot when her father's at work. I'm not trying to be a tattle, it's just wrong.

As you indicate you are friends with this this girl and her family getting the law involved should not be your first course of action.

From a legal standpoint, ss many of the above posters have stated, the age of consent for sex in NJ is 16 so if they are having sexual relations, that is not illegal and giving alcohol to a minor/minor consuming alcohol is, but as it misdemeanor in most states if they have no records all that is going to happen is a slap on the wrist, fines and community service. They are not going to stop what they are doing - they will likely just take their activities elsewhere and the girl and her family are not likely to want to be friends with you or your family any longer.

Either you or your parents should share your observations about what is going on in their house when they are not there and leave it to the parents to address the matter with their daughter as they see fit.

Well, in NJ she's legal. The cops can't do anything about it if it's consensual. I have a 16 y/o daughter and would want to know if it was my child. It sounds like the guy is a sleaze bag, and the girl in question has really poor judgement. If it was my daughter, the guy's first worry would not be the cops, it would be his girlfriends old man.

If he's supplying her with alcohol and her parents are not present and have not given permission, then THAT is illegal. Next time he shows with beer and her parents are not around, give my colleagues a jingle. Sometimes I don't enjoy my job, but sometimes, in cases like this one, it's a real pleasure.

Laws vary greatly from state to state. Even so, typically, even with "statutory rape" laws on the books, if it is concentual and she's like 16 and not say 13, he will get off with a slap on the wrist, at best. Now if he was 50 and she was 16, they might be more apt to press charges.

Prosecutors aren't particularly keen on spending much time on a case where there is a high likelyhood that they will be able to convince at least one juror that they are just "in love" and that the ages on the laws in the books are "arbitrary", etc. They will offer a plea bargain, and this guy who doesn't want to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life will jump on some "community service" type slap on the wrist that they offer him.

You can talk to the cops, but just don't expect a lot of results.

My grandmother was married at the age of 14 to a 23 year old man. Was he a pedophile?

In truth an unmarried 16 year old was considered an old maid for the vast majority of history.

Mind your own business. It's illegal, yes. Some fights aren't worth fighting though.

One of those fights being the raging hormones of youth.

With as much information as you have on whatever they're doing, I think you'd know if she was being raped or not. It doesn't sound that way.

Not to mention... you're going to have to talk to lots of cops, attorneys and beurocrats if you decide to come forward with it.

Edit: Aha... you failed to mention about what happens when the father isn't at home. If nothing else, I'd tell the family. They're responsible for what happens in their home, whether they are there or not. From there, let the family handle it.

Depends on the laws of your country, and you didn't say what country you're in.

In most countries that's perfectly legal.

Edit ...The age of consent in New Jersey is 16. Nothing illegal going on, so you'll have to just disapprove silently.

Edit again... Having sex with her is legal. Giving her beer isn't. THAT you could report to the police.

Of course you can report it. Of course the girl would need to testify. How can it be proven without doing so?

The age of consent is 16.

The beer, however, can get his world rocked. The problem is that you can't prove he's giving it to her. They could be playing Monopoly and she could be drinking Nestle Quik while he drinks beer.

that all depends on the laws of that particular state.

In FL for example, a 23 year old can have sex with a 16 year old legally if it's consensual.

Yes, definitely report the matter. If you are in the US, call the District Attorney in the county where the girl lives. There should also be a Children and Youth Services office in the county.

mind your own business...
if the 16 year old has a problem and tells you, then step in, but if this is your friend and you go rat out their bf then they will definitely be pissed off.

So girls just like older men.
