No, it's not relevant anymore, but I admit I watch royal ceremonies and weddings anyway.

Why? Every time I tune in, I always wonder how these people were able to come to power, and why people like me are interested in the pageantry. All of it is basically ridiculous, isn't it?

The general public have no idea how many man hours thus expense go into preparation for anything a royal does and how much disruption it causes. Some might think 'Well we pay the troops anyway so lets use them'

In this day and age and with UK in decline I see no reason why a country should support such an over privileged family, it almost becomes obscene!

Why not? If it's what the citizens of a nation want, then that means they find it relevant. A royal family represents a nation's continuity, its history, its traditions, its unity, its rituals. You'll notice that crowds of people will gather to wave and cheer at a royal who's on his/her way to a ceremony.

Are you asking if the Monarchy is necessary or if ceremonies are relevant?

I think the Monarchy is unnecessary sine they don't actually have a real role in the government other than being solely ornamental.

As far as ceremonies, I think they're important, but I wouldn't keep a King or Queen around in order to do them only a few times a year. Very, very costly.

as a resident of Britain the royal family are part of our history. they provide some stability to the country and the royal ceremonies go back hundreds of years. they provide income to the treasury from tourism but most of all they make us proud to be British.

Absolutely - pageantry brings in lots of tourist £. I see no reason to completely disconnect with the past - our ceremonies are part of our history. Everything in modern life is cheap, fast and disposable.
