You need the rebooting discs. or recovery discs. If you have these then you just put one in and follow the on screen instructions. If you dont have them speak to the local pc store or try the web and buy them. This will put the computer back to its original brand new factory settings and clear everything else that has been added by the owner.

A lot depends on the computer you have, some computers have software installed that will restore the computer back to the original factory default.
If your friend registered their Windows Xp then you need to get your own copy of it, if not you can reload it and register it as your windows. Woops, I see you said you did not have the CD so check the computer to see if it has the software loaded to return it to original factory settings.

If you want to start afresh then I'm afraid that you are going to have to buy a copy of XP. If you don't want to do that then you are going to have to stick with what you've got. This will mean a lot of work that may or may not be successful in cleaning up the registry and getting rid of any programs that you do not need.

If you are not too clever with pc's then you should really get someone else to reformat it for you - if you can get the cd. Again if you can't get the cd, you would be well advised to get someone you trust and knows what they are doing to clean it up for you.
Good luck

Download the O.S. as a back up onto a disk and fire it up.
It will act as an O.S. installer and start out fresh and new again.
