Not sure on this one, but traditionally the Messiah was a war leader. It is possbily the equivelent of Field Marshal. I would say that the search for a new Messiah started as soon as the first Roman troops took possession of Israel. However, the title is probably much older than that.
As far as Jewish expectations of a war leader Messiah is concerned, I would have to say that possibly the first Leader of Modern Israel fits the bill a lot better than some nomadic proffet talking about the kingdom of heaven.

The prophecy of the Messiah dates back to the time of Isaiah. The prophecy can be found in Isaiah 9:6 which reads, " For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. " Also Micah 5:2 states, "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. "
Jesus Christ is the only Messiah the world has ever known and His birthplace was in Bethlehem as was prophesied. This was never made into a part of the Judaic law.
