Where do I start? The essay, reccomendations, applying to many different colleges? I'm a junior right now and I'm trying to figure out everything ahead of time.

1-Start by investigating colleges and narrowing your field down to about 10--based on your interests, abilities, whether you/your parents want you to leave the area, finances.

2-Then consider: do I want a small school vs a large school; what kinds of activities are there; is it urban or rural or suburban? - - Does it fit ME (if you are a person of color, are there enough at school to make you feel welcome, etc.). Consider about 10 factors total.

3--narrow your list to about 7: one "reach for the stars" school (or 2), 3-5 middle schools (probably get in), one "safe" school.

4--get the applications, look them over, make a TIMELINE so you don't miss any dates! Prepare a list for letters of recommendation, and prepare a sheet for each reference giving them info like your GPA, your interests, the school, why you want to go, etc.. Do a few "generic essays" and then tailor then to each school. Most applications are now online. Organize your other information like activities on-campus, extra-curricular off-campus etc. Talk to others to get some ideas of how to present yourself.

5--of course, take your SAT. Take it early enough to retake if necessary (or it could be ACT).

6--don't forget to have fun in senior year! Starting early and staying organized can make your last HS year more fun and fulfilling.

7--wait for those acceptance letters to roll in! It only takes one, so don't get too down at 2-3 rejections before your acceptance.

Good luck and have a great year!!
