I've heard of pills called downers, and i understand uppers. Those get you high and give you a good feeling. But why were downers invented if they make you feel so bad? (i don't do drugs in advanced)

Things such as alcohol are downers as well, it doesn't always have to be a pill. To some people, this is just the high they want. Marijuana is also a downer, and it's the most widely used drug in America. Downer doesn't mean you feel bad, it just means you feel relaxed, lethargic, chill. There are some people that don't want to feel up and energetic, they crave to just be relaxed to go to sleep. Usually, manic people crave these types of things because they are constantly up or anxious or stressed about things. Hope this helps.

Actually some of the downers, like alcohol and marijuana, actually get you "high." They are called downers because they slow down metabolism or suppress certain mental functions. The uppers are drugs that speed up your metabolism or give you a "wired" feeling, like caffeine and cocaine. People wouldn't abuse drugs that made them feel bad.

"Downers" are sleeping pills, anti-anxiety pills, and "relaxation" pills...lots of people need them. There is a vicious drug cycle among especially entertainers (like Elvis and others) of using uppers to perform and then needing downers to come down and relax so they can sleep. Heroin is considered a downer as well--"mellows" you out so to sleep (in a bad way).

To counteract the uppers.

Once you get into using chemicals to alter your body's natural state, you tend to use more chemicals to regulate the effects of the other chemicals.
