Until my fellow citizens get off their butts and realize that representative democracy is not just a form of government, but also a contact sport. People need to get involved. It's great to have ideas and opinions, but I am sick and tired of hearing from people at the polling stations that they don't know who to vote for because they haven't read up on the candidates, so they'll probably just vote straight ticket. I am sick and tired of writing to my representatives or calling their offices and having their staff tell me they wish more people would at least express an opinion so that the senator or representative can get some feedback from his constituents. I am sick and tired of people listening to the spin doctors and not bothering to question or seek out the truth. I am sick and tired of people saying, "Why does it matter if I vote? I am only one person."

You see, that's part of the problem. People have opinions, but they don't take it to the logical conclusion and actually make demands when they vote. They're perfectly happy to tell a pollster who calls in the evening what they think, but they won't get off their butts and actively work for change.

And the truth of the matter is that leaders of the USA can disregard the demands of the majority of people as long as the people let them do it. Until people get involved, nothing is going to change. I know more people who don't bother to vote than I do those who do, and the majority of those who do don't pay attention to what they are doing.

They don't get it, so it's up to those of us who do, and who do care to spread the word, work our butts off, and try to get the machine moving again, because right now it's stalled. If we don't get it going soon, it's just going to break.

The only thing most of them care about is getting re-elected. Whatever they have to do to further that end is what they will do. This is the reason so many of them work for corporate interests instead of the best interests of their constituents. It is really aggravating for me because I live in a district that is mostly conservative, so my views are probably trashed when they come in. My representatives are in a definite comfort zone in my area. The only thing that the common person can do is contact their representatives and let them know their views on important issues, no matter how futile that tactic may seem to be on the surface of it.
As long as the majority of voters in the country pay lip service and do nothing, we can expect this kind of representation in government. As soon as people start actually studying issues in depth, perhaps they will come to see just how radically different their own agendas are from the people they vote into office. Then, they need to start voting the issues and which politician follows their view more closely, instead of which party they are in.

That's a really excellent question. I think it may be until the American people realize the two party system just doesn't work, and create a viable third party. The two corporate parties we have today just use the other party as a boggy man to draw votes. They never solve any of the nations problems.

The length of their term I would imagine..unless some "plebiscite" were invoked? I don't really know..only that in Australia, the Prime Minister,John Howard was voted out of office after 11.5 years of 'leadership'..Bush Jnr. referred to him as "The Sherriff of South-East Asia" ..or some such baloney.. as Iraqi War was mounted..I wish we had your system..such swine as Howard and Thatcher could not have lasted as long as they did...Every-body's Happy When They're All Making Money!!!
