The purpose of putting a sponge on the nd of earphones and headphones is to muffle the sound that is coming directly from th source. Sure you could still listen to whatever without it, but your chances of going deaf may be higher.

I don't know about earphones but sponges are used in Headphones to cushion the pads against your ears so they feel comfortable. Also sponges help to isolate outside noises. Some of the expensive headphones use sponges with very soft leather covering which protects the sponges from disintegrating.

The sponge should make them more comfortable and even help the sound quality. Look at the speakers in the trunk of a car...................they are protected and give off better sound by using material that enhances the sound and muffles out unwanted noise. You aren't actually putting a sponge in a part of your ear that would harm you. Check out your speakers right on your computer as they are covered !

I agree with alex and ear wax don't go on directly on the earphone/headphone(sometimes). So you can clean just the sponge

You may listen without pads, but I think you will find your ears cumpled and sore after a while unless the phones are really light. And foamless earphones let in more outside sound and let more sound escape to bug the people who didn't want to hear your music in the first place.

the sponge changes the size a little bit, it makes the earbuds a little larger and because they are soft, the size adjusts. for some people the buds are too small by themselves and the sponge makes it a nice tight fit.

it's to protect the ears. Using ones like earbuds that actually fit inside your ears cause hearing loss at certain frequencies.
