No metaphysical problem is more vigorously
discussed by the present day psychologists than
that of mind and body. Most of us assume that all
thinking takes place in the brain. It is only
since a few decades that psychologists are
treating body and mind as one unit called
psycho-somatic system. This led to the development
of new subjects like Psycho-biology and
Psycho-neuro-immunology. Modern medicine has
recognized the brain-spine system as one unit, but
it does not assign thinking functions to any part
of the spine. It is now known that even when a
considerable amount of brain is removed through
surgery, a person can still have reasonable mental
abilities and can lead a near normal life. Modern
research found that one region in brain can
perform several tasks and so can compensate for
the loss of damage of another region. On the
contrary, surgical removal of some 'safe' parts
from womb of women is known to cause problems of
mind like dementia. Then, what are the components
of mind and where are they located?

Indians put their hand on the chest when they say
"I am saying this from the depths of my Manas".
Manas (rational mind) is a common word used in
India, and no one shows his head when he uses that
word. The Europeans have an esoteric tradition
that mind exists independently of the physical
brain, and thoughts become known to a person
through the brain [1]. During the 1970s,
neurologists became increasingly dissatisfied with
the epiphenomenalism [2] theories of mind and
brain. More scientists came to suspect that mind
and brain were different in a kind and could
interact.

Brain is the matter. It is part of our physical aspect. When a doctor open up your head, what he will see is your brain. On the other hand, mind is more than that. The brain functions because of the mind. When you think of something, the processing unit of your thinking is the mind. Many scientist, philosophers, lay etc agree that the mind and the soul is the same. However, that is not the case.
Mind is invisible. It cannot be touched. But you can study it because it is working. You feel, you smell, you taste, you think etc all of these things are the work of your mind. When someone is doing something stupid, the common saying is " you are out of your mind". We never say you are out of your brain. WHY? because brain is just a matter and what inside in that matter is the mind. Remember that the mind is the function of the brain. It is totally different from each other. EXAMPLE. A coconut has a water inside. How do you call that water? is it still a coconut or different from coconut? Mind is something within our personality and not just inside the brain. It is part of the wholess of being "I". While reading this, you are thinking of something, maybe, but your mind is analyzing it. In short, brain is matter and mind is the function of your brain.

Put simply:
Brain = physical, nervous system, instincts, keeps the body working.
Mind = self-awareness, emotions, volition (free will), intuition, memory, those "gut feelings", thought, belief, soul, perception, individuality.

If the mind were as simple as the brain, artificial intelligence on a developed human level would be available much sooner. If the mind was simply chemical reactions in the brain, just like the brain, it could be simulated much more easily.

But then, does it not make it a form of cloning?

"Intelligence is the ability to learn, live, think, judge and communicate, using instincts and knowledge to expand and invent."

The brain is physiological. The mind is more than just the brain. For example you can think with your heart and feel with your mind. Another way to look at it on a purely physiological dimension, the mind differs from the brain because it incorporates your entire nervous system, including your solar plexus and spine. But I think that the mind has a deeper nature to it. There is more to our understanding than what our brain perceives. What about your beliefs, your spirit, your soul, your ingrained concepts of morality. These are functions of the mind and not necessarily the brain in and of itself.

The key difference is that the brain being a physical machine, does not incorporate you... it is just owned by you... it would work as it is even if it belonged to someone else. Mind incorporates us in the sense that it functions on the basis of our inclinations... it represents us through the beliefs, values and feelings, which exert a great influence on the decision making.... the brain's decision making is reflex oriented and highly consistent like any machine... the mind is the real one which makes our proactive decisions and conveys them to the brain as required. Brain thus is a mere physical asset we have like all other parts of our body, but mind is a manifestation of our self and its will, as also being the sole conveyor of our will to our brain.

We think only with our mind.
Our brain is just a bunch of wavy gravy.

Our brain houses our mind but our mind is not our brain. Our mind is an active response to all stimuli which flows to our brain from every other part of our body. the brain processes while our mind translates.

The brain is center of the nervous system and the seat of consciousness and understanding and the mind is the thought process that our brain lets us have. The mind is the soul and memory that we put into our brain.
