Is that a good deal? On of my friend's friend is selling his used tank with fish and stuff in it.I have not checked it out yet, but I'm guessing it has tank, decorations, gravel, filter, hood.
I'd like to know if it's a good deal before I drive to check it out.

As for transporting a tank, would I have to pack it in any special way? Empty all tank contents, and put into car as usual?

It's hard to say without knowing more particulars. A new 55 gallon setup at WalMart is about $170.

Price would depend on the condition of the tank (in my area, used tanks generally go for about $1 per gallon if they hold water), if the equipment works, brand(s) and types of equipment, and number and type of fish. A biowheel or canister filter would be expected to cost more than a Tetra filter or undergravel. Is the heater submersible or hang-on? What type of lighting (incandescent, fluorescent, T-5, power compact)? Are there powerheads or other equiment too? What type and how many fish (African cichlids would go for more than danios or tetras)? Freshwater, or saltwater? (If saltwater, and equipment and fish are included, that's a GREAT deal, as long as there are no disease or algae problems!) Are the fish a species you want, or will you need to find them new homes?

I think you should contact your friend for more particulars before you decide. Find a good online catalog (this is a good one with both equipment and livestock: http://www.thatpetplace.com/ ) where you can look up the prices of the equipment new, and estimate about half the cost new for buying used. You'll be able to get some prices for fish as well, but consider that what you see for sale online will generally be young fish, and adults of longer-lived fish will be worth more (but they'll have shorter life spans).

ADDITION: I've always moved my tanks by siphoning out almost all the water - I just leave enough to cover the gravel so I don't lose any of the beneficial bacteria in it if it's a small tank. Then, I lay a plastic garbage bag that I split open or saran wrap (depends on the size of the tank) and tape this along the edge to keep the water from splashing out. If it's big, I transfer the gravel and enough water to cover it to 5 gallon buckets (as many as are needed) so there's nothing in the tank. Wrap with a blanket or sleeping bag to prevent anything from bumping into the tank and breaking the glass (I use a truck to transport larger tanks). If you can get this into the back seat of a car, you might be able to hold it in place with seatbelts.

I keep at least one 5 gallon bucket of water with decorations, driftwood, etc. plus the filter media, and another one if there are live plants. Fish I bag (like they do at the store) with 1/3-1/2 of the bag being fish and water. These I transport in an old picnic cooler. It keeps the temperature more constant, and if I need time to get the tank set up where I'm going, I can release the fish into the cooler and hang a filter on it or throw in an air stone to use as a temporary tank.
