Just put an arm around them and have the shoulders available for them when they need them.

Listen and really hear what they are saying. Give comfort as you can- whether it is getting them out for a beer and a movie or taking a walk and talking about the situation. Letting the person know he or she is not alone and you will be there as best you can is something a real friend can do.

It depends on how much hard time they are going through. I would comfort him/her to my best!

Could have been the whiskey, might have been the gin! Could have been the 3 or 4 6-packs I don't know!! Well, it might not solve the problem or hard-time........but it will sure, "put it on hold"
Talk, listen, just be there!! that is about all you can do.

Be there, lend an ear....listen to them.
Perhaps let them know how much they mean to you and see if getting them out of the house, into a public place helps.
