one of my really good friends recently broke his femer and tore ligaments playing soccer. He was devistated when he learned he made the team but couldn't play. The Doctor recently told us he may be out of sports for good! we don;t know how to break it to him....any ideas?

If that's indeed the case, it will be the doctor's responsibility to tell him that news, so you're off the hook with that one. Your role will be equally challenging, though. You'll have to be supportive as he faces whatever medical eventualities the near future brings. So prepare yourself by thinking on those things.
One word of caution here: Don't be too eager to accept a "doom-and-gloom" prognosis and run with it. Doctors estimate recovery chances by assessing scientific variables; those are important contributors to determining an outcome's potential, to be sure. But there are variables that are of the human spirit; things like will, and tenacity that aren't measured scientifically, but which factor into recovery just as significantly (if not moreso). Good friends help keep that hope alive so that the spirit is actively engaged towards its own recovery at all times. That's a big job. Good luck.
