I grew up with these girls but I am having trouble feeling "happy" for them. One of these girls is moving into a gated community in Scottsdale in a week! Did I go wrong by working? We are working to make monthly rent and go w/o health insurance or pay insane amounts while they are living in really nice houses, pay $0 for insurance or prescriptions just because they have children. Seriously. Not all welfare moms are living in the ghetto. This is a 2000 sq. ft home/2 car garage. What gives???

btw-i feel bad,,I WANT to b happy for these girls. One of them is like my family, we grew up 2gether. She has had some hard times, but it was her choice to have her kids. She was trying to keep a guy around who did not care. But....What about those of us working women w/o kids who are struggling, or men. We get nothing but almost half of our paychecks taken away. I would loooove to finish school, but I can't pay for that and rent. Moms on welfare even get assistance w/ college. Why??? Go broke on student loans like the rest of us..

lala-i think the point of my question was lost on you. People w/ new cars and homes living in gated communities are not poor. There are too many loopholes in this system and you obviously are unfamiliar w/ it. Get w/ it plz..

No, no, no. Research it. I'm up too late, only distracting myself with yahoo because the stress of everything else is too much, or else I'd come up with something smart-sounding. I'd come up with some references or something...something.

You know those folks are an exception. I have been on government services for 8 years, and it has been nothing but struggle.

I had a kid as a teenager. I have no real family. I've always worked, and currently I go to school full time as well. My daughter gets full coverage medicaid, but I have no health insurance, so medical expenses can be disastrous. I barely pay my rent. I've been on waitlists for HUD and other programs, but I've never been offered an arrangement that would work. I have no car and have never had enough extra money to buy one. I get food stamps and my daughter gets free lunch at school. Daycare is incredibly expensive...

I dunno. I'm supposed to be writing essays. It makes me sad that this is the dominant opinion about "welfare moms" (at least I think it is). I used to get welfare, and I'd take it now if I qualified, but I'm not living easy. I never have, and I am incredibly happy that your friends have been given a home, because I know how scary housing instability can be.

Life is hard. Please be kind to those who seem like freeloaders; for every lazy or ingrateful one there are fifty just trying to get by.

These are government subsidies. It's not as good as it seems. The social worker can enter your "house" at any time during the day. They can look through everything. and anything. Your friend will receive housing while her children are under age. After that she will have to get help on her own. It is better for welfare children to get medical aid than to get some serious disease and spread it to other children. The county will get blamed for not doing anything about it. Your friend will never own the house. The county tries to educate welfare recipients so that they can get off of welfare and be on their own. Immigrants will receive temporary help for adults and additional help for their children. Who wants to see a hungry and sick child? You've seen them on T.V. in Africa and it bothers some folks. But if they see them up close from a different country, the cry, "My taxes!" Do you know the so call war in in Iraq to get rid of ghost weapons will cost over $1,000,000,000,000 and who knows how many lives? Just think of what that amount of money could do for you and for our citizens and even citizens of poor countries!! Live you life and save your pennies. Be friends if you want to, you don't need to happy with nothing other than with yourself. Good Luck

Because the G man wants to make sure that those families remain on Government assistance and that you keep paying taxes. Go to www.zeitgeistmovie.com to fully understand. It is a two hour movie.

Illegal immigrants also get more aid than you ever will. Americans work four months out of the year just to pay taxes. Do you ever get any of that aid? Medical coverage? No. But you better believe that low income and immigrants will.
