In order to increase soccer's popularity in the U.S. and strengthen our national team, I think American strategists need to loosen up and allow more creativity. Altidore's success and his possible move to Real Madrid reflects his creative style.

Not just MLS, but U.S. Soccer generally, needs to move away from the English style of play and more toward the Latin style of play. I think the recent results from Euro qualifying shows the problem with the English approach to the game.

One player, however, is not the solution as much as the solution is a change of coaching philosophy and a hard crackdown on so-called "professional fouls." If the rules were literally enforced, most "professional fouls" (intentional fouls in the mid-field designed to disrupt the flow of the game) would receive cautions. This would lead to fewer such fouls and make the game more interesting. However, the current leadership of MLS is not interested in this approach.

While keeping Altidore might be in the best interest of MLS, it is not in the best interest of U.S. Soccer. The level of competition in the MLS is roughly equivalent to the second level in the top soccer nations in Europe or the top level in some of the middle nations in Europe. U.S. Soccer needs players like Altidore playing against the best players in the world on a regular basis. That would probably means sending Altidore someplace other than Real Madrid. The hard thing for the U.S. has been finding spots for its non-goalkeepers where they will get regular playing time. Altidore would probably spend more time on the reserve team than with the regular team at Real Madrid.
