how long is a piece of string.
eventually when tv's are running far higher than 1080p as standard and the time, money etc has gone into games i think it could become film like.
think what it used to be with the atari, amstrad, commadore, amiga etc. that was advanced - then came along the saturn, ps1 - then the ps2 and exbox, now the ps and elite.
all superior to their predecessor - and through that same course of time tv's have evolved, format for storing and using data (HD and BR)
who youls have believed 20 years ago that you'd have a tv that would be as crisp and colouful as lookin out of the window.
it will take many many years now for games to become cinematic and true to life (filmlike) with the inability to tell the difference between what was a game and what was real.
personally i feel this not to be for the time to evolve technologically - but it would be financial suicide for the big guns - sony, microsoft to say the least.
they must surely HAVE to milk this technology boom for as long as possible. australia and canada have had high def for years yet its still in its infancy here - blue ray and HD disks are really a thing of the past - yet only recently introduced to joe public.
in a nutshell - it will be possible to have true life games - just years before we'll get em.

Well, really games are already very realistic. I think that games will get a little bit more realistic, but in terms of realism, most of that has already been accomplished. If you want to see how realistic games will get graphics wise, watch the PS3 and it's games evlove. The PS3 has the most potential by far in terms of graphics and processing.
As we all know, the games that come out for a console during launch and during it's early stages, don't have the same graphics as games that come out during the later stages of a consoles life cycle. And I know that this was the case with PS1 and PS2 games because games like Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2 really pushed the PS2 graphics wise.
But, I guess I could give you one example of realism is one of the PS3 exclusive games, Uncharted Drakes Fortune. When you step in water in Uncharted Drakes Fortune, Drake's clothes will get wet, and his jeans will turn darker because of the wetness, and his jeans will gradually dry as time passes.
Also, the deeper you go in the water, the more his clothes will get wet. For example if you go in the water that comes up to Drakes waist only half of his clothes will get wet and his clothes really look like real wet clothes.

it will be limitless as theres always newer components and prehiperals to make better looking games. i mean how realistic can mario get? you see the light and water effects getting better and better but because mario is a cartoon character then realism will never be achieved. i suppose with games that use "human" characters will achieve this at one point. i'd say square-soft are leading the race to create realism. i'd like to see the characters from "the spirits within" movie but with a better story...:D now how good would that be?
