If you're looking for something handleable, probably a Colombian Boa Constrictor. Some from other locations have nastier temperaments. Also, most tree snakes are nasty, & Ball Pythons are notorious for sometimes being hard to feed--as in, not at all. Here's more info on boa's: http://members.tripod.com/~boids/boas.html

I think it is best to just stick to a ball python. Most of the supposed to be larger snakes are going to be larger snakes. Past the nine feet mark. If all you want is a different look why not look at a morph. Ball python morphs are beautiful. Check out mojave ball pythons on google. IF those are not pretty i don't know what is. I really think you should start out with this and not be so macho and go after the bigger snakes. Cause with bigger snakes come needed bigger habitats. Which will take up alot o space sometimes. I talked to a fellow who recnelty perchased a 12 foot columbian red tail recently dude just gave it a room in his home. An entire bedroom for one snake. With a heat source and everthing. So you must think about that too interms of where is it staying once you bring it home.

a female brazilian rainbow boa.
Brazilian rainbow boas are beautiful!! I have a male (they don't get as large, they are about 4-5 feet)... and he is awesome. I'm pretty sure a female should get to at least 6 feet and even if that's not as long as you'd prefer, they are GORGEOUS snakes so you should at least look into it.
Also the emerald tree boas. Another beautiful snake that gets about that size.
AND if you need a recommendation for a good breeder to order from, if http://www.snakemuseum.com has the kind of snake you want, I'd order from there. They have some great snakes and really seem to know what they're doing.

How about one of those 20 foot anacondas. You can keep it in the bathtub and let it loose in the neighbor hood every 5 or 6 months to free- feed. When it's full it will slither back home.......
Seriuosly, a 7-8 foot snake is a lot to handle. I would start off with a ball python. Good luck anyway.

I think before you choose, you need to consider your experience level in keeping snakes. If you haven't had much experience (yet) a rainbow or emerald tree boa wouldn't be a good beginner snake. These have a little more to their care.
A better choice might be a corn snake (to 5 feet) or kingsnake (varies with species but can get to 6 feet - some get nippy).
Another choice which may be a little more difficult, but more unusual is a carpet python. These can be 4-9 feet depending on the species.

To Dr Science freak........
Blood pythons have the same temperament as Ball pythons?
LMFAO
You obviously have NOOOOO idea what youre talking about
And to answer the question....
You cant really think about getting a snake as a pet by the size itll get.
Besides.... the snakes that get to "your size" are few.
My suggestion would be get a nice little captive bred red tail boa.
Theyre easy to keep...... pretty docile.
But they will get bigger than 8 feet long.
Do yourself a large favor
Dont get a Blood python. lol
And by the way......... Burmese pythons will get to be approx. 19 feet long
Not very "handleable" by anyone besides the truly experienced

Then try getting a green tree Python, a rainbow boa, a corn snake, or a red rat snake.

Cool and you could feet it live chickens and stuff. I watch hours after hours of video on youtube. I love seeing things feed off of each other its all interesting. Ya I guess I am sick.
The sickest I have seen which I cannot really watch is when someone puts a full grown mouse or rat in a fish tank filled with paranas or snapping turtles. Gross

Burmese python is a good handleable snake. The albino ones are especially pretty. They are yellow and white.
