I am a newb to this game. I was wondering what to do about the professions. What I would like to have is a character that can do some damage with swords for individual enemies as well as cast strong magic for a group of enemies. Any suggestions for the mix of primary and secondary professions?

About your only real choice for something like that is a Warrior/Elementalist, BUT you won't be able to cast spells often thanks to the warrior's low energy and energy regen.

You could do it the other way, E/W, but primary elemenalist have low health and poor armor, making melee battle a bad idea.

Another option would be Warrior/Necromancer who has a few area effect spells, but the same problem as the W/E combo.

For the most part is is hard to do both weapon and spell damage well in Guild Wars. Usually you have to give up something the other needs to do both. Espetially when it comes to balancing energy, since most physical classes have poor energy and energy regen.

If you are in the Nightfall campaign, consider the dervish. Dervishes are capable of hitting more than one thing at a time with their normal attacks and most skills, but you have to use the scythe to do it.

Hmmm, don't try to be a "Jack of all trades" with 1 character. A warrior is an excellent fighter with a sword, but sucks with magic damage.

A fire elementalist is great at laying down massive amounts of damage to a mob of enemies, but has weak armor and is easily killed.

A Warrior/Elementalist trying to cast strong magic is a horrible build. You just don't have the energy to pull it off.

If you have Nightfall, you might enjoy playing a Dervish. They use a Scythe + a lot of enchantments to tackle mobs of enemies effectively.

Maybe a Warrior/Elementalist? My personal favorite combination is Ranger/Elementalist with Beastmastery.
